Position Overview: The Ed Nichols Math Center Tutors work with the Math Coordinator within the Academic Success Center (ASC) to provide academic support devoted to mathematics for students at all levels. The tutors, reporting to the Math Coordinator and the ASC Director, are key players in supporting the success and persistence of all students. 

1. Teaching Excellence

      • Support student learning of concepts related to mathematics.

      • Participate in CRLA training.
      • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with colleagues; strengthen relationships between the college and the community through community outreach activities.
      • Support the Math Coordinator and ASC Director in the implementation and refinement of practices focused on learning assistance, tutoring, and peer education, with a focus on mathematics.
      • Participate in proactive programming and innovative strategies to enhance student learning.

2. Holistic Student Support and Outreach

  • Remain available, responsive, and approachable while working with students via all tutoring modalities.
  • Create an environment that is open and encouraging to all students.
  • Assist with events and workshops to support students in extra-disciplinary and co-curricular activities and skills.
  • Promote the Ed Nichols Math Center, the Academic Success Center, and other available resources.

3. Organizational Culture 

  • Assist the Math Coordinator by maintaining a personal schedule in the ASC's scheduling software.
  • Perform activities to ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the Ed Nichols Math Center.

4. Program Innovation

  • Assist with the development and routine operations of the ASC.
  • Communicate needs for program, policy, or process improvements to the Math Coordinator.

5. Fiscal Stewardship

  • Work with the ASC Coordinator to submit accurate time sheets for payroll in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

Achieved A's in college level math courses up through Calculus I and/or B's in college level math courses with a recommendation from a member of the Math faculty. Experience working with students in an academic setting. Knowledge of basic academic skills application and the ability to demonstrate the successful application of various academic skills. Demonstrated expertise in contemporary best practices in learning assistance. Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with computers and other forms of technology utilized in providing high-quality instruction and the understanding and successful use of learning technology. A passion for student success.

Office Duties:

Maintain regular hours in person and online as assigned, assist with phone calls and office communication as needed, and attend staff training.  Perform other duties and projects as assigned by the department leadership and in conjunction with the Division of Academic affairs initiatives.

Pay Range: $12.00 - $20.00/Hr dependent upon degree achievement
