Job Announcement
Join the Park Authority and our nationally recognized team of professionals! The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking a Golf Course Superintendent (Golf Course Supt II) to be a part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. With more than 25,000 acres of parkland, nine Rec Centers, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more, FCPA is an exciting organization to be a part of and there are many opportunities for staff to make a difference at every level.
This position is under the direction of the Director of Agronomy and Golf Division Director, this position is fully responsible for all maintenance functions, facilities, equipment, and staff associated with Burke Lake Golf Course. The incumbent develops and implements a comprehensive turf management program, directs the work of staff related to turf management, irrigation, equipment repair and general building maintenance and custodial duties and conducts moderately complex budgeting and accounting tasks. This position conducts staff training, development, and recognition activities and coordinates maintenance activities with the site manager to ensure maximum utilization of the multi- course complex. Additionally, the position completes and submits various financial, administrative, and statistical reports and complies and retains operational and safety records.

Illustrative Duties

  • Manages the maintenance and operation of a large fleet of greens mowers, fairway movers, trim mowers, rough mowers, utility vehicles, spray tanks, sand trap rakes, seeders, aerators, etc.;
  • Develops and implements a detailed turf management plan for assigned greens, tees, roughs and lawn areas (and special complexities of cart paths);
  • Establishes criteria for and determines golf course playability and authorizes the opening and closing of the grounds;
  • Supervises the maintenance and operation of a large automated irrigation system including pumphouse, central computer, field controllers, valves and sprinkler heads;
  • Plans for and supervises major improvement projects such as greens and tees construction, cart path construction, sand bunker construction, site landscaping, pond dredging, etc.;
  • Authorizes purchase requests and invoices for payment;
  • Inspects park facilities and grounds for safety hazards and operational deficiencies, recommends improvements and initiates corrective measures;
  • Accountable for the purchase, storage and application and disposal of hazardous materials including pesticides, fertilizers and other turf care products;
  • Compiles and retains operational and safety records and complies with federal, state and County safety standards;
  • Develops budget justifications for capital equipment, staffing and annual operating supplies;
  • Hires, supervises, schedules and evaluates a medium sized staff;
  • Plans, schedules and conducts specialized on-site staff training;
  • Completes and submits various financial, administrative and statistical reports;
  • Adheres to revenue and expense limits, goals and guidelines for specialized areas of supervision.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from a two-year associate degree program with major course work in agronomy, turfgrass management, recreation and parks, horticulture or related field plus three years' experience as golf course superintendent or other applicable position at a golf course.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A two-year associate degree program with major course work in agronomy or turf grass management.
  • A minimum of three years' experience as an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent or other applicable position at a golf course.
  • Certified Fertilizer Applicator License or ability to obtain within 6 months.

  • Driver's License (Required)
  • Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License (Required)
  • Certified Fertilizer Applicator License (Required within 6 months)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, and driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to climb on and off equipment. Ability to use both hand and foot controls for extended periods. Ability to wear respirators and other protective equipment and clothing. Climb on and off various golf course maintenance equipment. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
