Turbine Aerodynamic Design Engineer information

What does a turbine aerodynamic design engineer do?

A Turbine Aerodynamic Design Engineer is responsible for designing and optimizing the aerodynamic performance of turbine components, such as blades and vanes, used in gas or steam turbines. They use computational fluid dynamics (CFD), wind tunnel testing, and other analysis methods to maximize efficiency, reduce emissions, and ensure structural integrity. Their work is crucial in industries like aerospace and power generation, where turbine performance directly impacts energy output and operational costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a turbine aerodynamic design engineer?

To thrive as a Turbine Aerodynamic Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, advanced knowledge of fluid dynamics, and experience with turbine design principles. Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, 3D CAD tools, and data analysis systems is typically required, along with relevant certifications or advanced degrees. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure innovative, efficient, and reliable turbine designs that meet performance and safety standards in highly technical industries.

What are some common challenges faced by turbine aerodynamic design engineers during the development process?

Turbine Aerodynamic Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing blade shapes to achieve maximum efficiency while meeting strict safety and durability requirements. Balancing aerodynamic performance with manufacturability and cost constraints can be complex, especially when integrating new materials or working with advanced computational tools. Collaborating closely with mechanical engineers, manufacturing teams, and testing specialists is essential to address these challenges and ensure that designs perform as expected in real-world conditions.

What is the difference between Turbine Aerodynamic Design Engineer vs Gas Turbine Mechanical Engineer?

AspectTurbine Aerodynamic Design EngineerGas Turbine Mechanical Engineer
Primary FocusOptimizing blade aerodynamics and airflow for turbinesDesigning and maintaining mechanical components of gas turbines
Required SkillsFluid dynamics, aerodynamics, CFD analysisMechanical design, thermodynamics, materials science
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, design offices, testing facilitiesManufacturing plants, maintenance, testing facilities
Industry UsagePower generation, aerospace, industrial turbinesPower plants, aerospace, energy sectors

The Turbine Aerodynamic Design Engineer primarily focuses on airflow and blade aerodynamics to improve turbine efficiency, while the Gas Turbine Mechanical Engineer handles the mechanical aspects of turbine components. Both roles require engineering credentials and are vital in turbine development, but they emphasize different technical skills and responsibilities within the same industry.

  • Perform and oversee aerodynamic simulations of Archer eVTOL aircraft.

  • Lead the aerodynamic design and optimization of aircraft OML components.

  • Analyze flight test and wind tunnel data to validate and improve aerodynamic models.

Job description

Archer is an aerospace company based in San Jose, California building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility. We are designing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric aircraft that can carry four passengers while producing minimal noise.
Our sights are set high and our problems are hard, and we believe that diversity in the workplace is what makes us smarter, drives better insights, and will ultimately lift us all to success. We are dedicated to cultivating an equitable and inclusive environment that embraces our differences, and supports and celebrates all of our team members.
What you'll do:
  • Perform and oversee low/mid/high fidelity aerodynamic simulations of Archer eVTOL aircraft
  • Lead the aerodynamic design and optimization of aircraft OML components to maximize performance and efficiency
  • Architect linear, non-linear, and real-time aerodynamic models to predict aircraft behavior, performance, stability, and control
  • Analyze flight test and wind tunnel data to identify model discrepancies, validating and improving vehicle aerodynamic models
  • Develop efficient methods to integrate flight test data back into aerodynamic simulation models of various fidelities and complexities
  • Contribute to the development of Archer aerodynamic software stack, improving methods and workflows
  • Partner with flight test pilots and multidisciplinary teams to resolve complex modelling issues and update flight simulators

What you need:
  • BS / MS / PhD in Aerospace Engineering or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience with BS, or 8+ years of experience with MS, or 4+ years of experience with PhD modeling rotorcraft, tiltrotor, eVTOL aerodynamics at full-vehicle level
  • Expert level understanding of fixed-wing and rotorcraft aerodynamics, performance, and stability & control
  • Proven experience with gradient-based and gradient-free optimization techniques
  • Experience with aerodynamic design of airfoils, wings, control surfaces or similar.

Experience with surrogate modeling techniques (Kriging, Neural Networks or similar) for aerodynamic modeling and design
  • Advanced Python proficiency
  • Experience with software development tools and best practices: version control (Git), software testing, environment management, CI/CD
  • Experience with experimental data processing and reduction techniques
  • Excellent work planning and issue resolution skills
