What is a truck pup driver?

A Truck Pup Driver operates a truck with a pup trailer, which is a smaller trailer attached to the main truck for hauling additional cargo. These drivers are responsible for transporting materials such as gravel, asphalt, or construction supplies between sites. They must have strong driving skills, experience with maneuvering multi-trailer setups, and often a commercial driver's license (CDL). Safety, load securing, and adherence to transportation regulations are also key parts of the job.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a truck pup driver?

A Truck Pup Driver is commonly responsible for transporting materials or freight using a truck with a pup trailer, which involves making multiple stops and maneuvering in tighter spaces than standard semi-trucks. Daily tasks include vehicle safety inspections, securely coupling and uncoupling pup trailers, loading and unloading cargo, and maintaining accurate delivery logs. Drivers regularly communicate with dispatchers and site staff to coordinate deliveries and adapt to any schedule changes. The role often requires flexibility, attention to safe driving practices, and the ability to work independently throughout various shifts or routes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the truck pup driver position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Truck Pup Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), safe driving skills, and experience operating tractor-trailers with pup (smaller secondary) trailers. Proficiency in using ELD (Electronic Logging Devices), air brake systems, and efficient coupling/uncoupling techniques is often required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and good communication with dispatch and site personnel are valuable soft skills. These capabilities ensure the safe, timely, and efficient delivery of loads while reducing risks and supporting effective teamwork.
