As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for truck drivers hourly in the United States is $27.09, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.99 and $31.73 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a truck driver hourly?

Truck Drivers Hourly are professional drivers who operate commercial trucks and are paid based on the number of hours they work, rather than by mileage or delivery. Their responsibilities typically include transporting goods between locations, loading and unloading cargo, and ensuring compliance with safety and transportation regulations. Hourly truck drivers may work for logistics companies, retailers, or other organizations that require regular transportation of goods. This pay structure can offer more predictable income and may include overtime pay for hours worked beyond the standard workweek.

What does a typical work schedule look like for hourly truck drivers, and how does it affect work-life balance?

Hourly truck drivers often work shifts that can vary depending on the employer, route, and freight type. Schedules may include early mornings, late nights, weekends, or even split shifts, especially for local or regional deliveries. While hourly pay can offer more predictable earnings compared to mileage-based roles, drivers may experience fluctuating hours based on demand and delivery schedules. Many employers aim to provide consistent hours, but overtime is common during peak periods. Balancing work and home life can be challenging, but local routes typically allow drivers to return home daily, supporting better work-life balance than long-haul positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a truck driver hourly, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Truck Driver (Hourly), you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), a clean driving record, and knowledge of DOT regulations. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and basic vehicle maintenance tools is typically required. Strong time management, communication, and customer service skills help drivers handle schedules, interact with clients, and address unexpected challenges. These capabilities are crucial for ensuring timely deliveries, safety compliance, and positive service experiences.

What is the difference between Truck Drivers Hourly vs Delivery Drivers Hourly?

Truck Drivers Hourly and Delivery Drivers Hourly both involve driving roles in the transportation industry, but they differ mainly in work environment, credentials, and typical schedules. Truck drivers usually require a CDL and handle long-distance freight, while delivery drivers often have standard licenses and focus on local deliveries. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find the right fit for their skills and preferences.
