Job description

Overview: Apogee School for Gifted Children seeks an outgoing, self-motivated administrator for the role of School Principal starting July 2026. The next principal of Apogee will see the school through to its next phase of development–growing the enrollment of the K-8+ program within the school’s new location.


Background: Apogee School for the Gifted was established in 2016 as a haven for gifted youth. Since its inception, Apogee School has provided advanced learning opportunities and socioemotional support to gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) students. What started as one classroom with two students has grown into 40 students grades K-9. Apogee is in its adolescent form, poised to grow, develop, and expand its programs.


The principal must balance the needs of stakeholder groups while paving the way to the next evolution of Apogee. Along with essential job functions, the next principal will enact and oversee the next stage of strategic planning. Strategic plans within the next 1-3 years focus on curricular revision, academic communication with families, and increasing teacher accountability while finding sustainable pathways to financially support faculty and program development.


Required Qualifications

  • Indiana Building Level License
  • Masters Degree in Educational Psychology or related field
  • 3 years of experience in school administration
  • 3 years teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Indiana High Ability license or completion of High Ability certificate or graduate program
  • Experience in Special Education

Essential Job Functions

  • Providing a positive, proactive leadership vision for the school, while supporting all stakeholders by building rapport, responsiveness, and trust
  • Overall management of all daily operations
  • Faculty hiring, training, supervision, accountability, and support
  • Supporting students’ various socioemotional needs in a close-knit community
  • Working to resolve serious issues of student discipline and faculty conduct across stakeholders in a timely, efficient, and professional manner
  • Maintaining relationships with landlord (co-located school) and communication about facilities usage (shared schedules, maintenance, security, special events)
  • Provide administrative guidance for Apogee's Parent-Teacher Organization
  • Discovering new avenues for student academic and talent development, and advocating for those needs at a group and/or individual level
  • Designing plans for professional development programming
  • Student admissions and enrollment
  • Semi-annual scheduling of academic program
  • Providing disciplinary and behavior management support
  • Providing co-regulation for dysregulated students
  • Working with families and educational professionals to create behavior support plans
  • Overseeing all testing (ILEARN, Checkpoints, IREAD, NWEA)
  • Updating essential documents and calendars for effective functioning of the school
  • Ensuring accurate grading and distribution of student academic records
  • Leading whole-school events (e.g., market day, talent show, founder’s day, end-of-semester family days)
  • Update school safety plans and coordinate with landlord and stakeholders to run drills and training simulations.
  • Additional oversight on prescription medication distribution (especially controlled substances) during teacher absences.
  • Minor first-aid and nurse station responsibilities along with communication with families on student illness and injuries
  • Supervision of overnight 7-8 grade trip
  • Additional teaching responsibilities as assigned (subbing or expertise based)
