Job description

Summary:

The South Florida Sun Sentinel is seeking an enterprising, versatile News Reporter to cover Broward and Palm Beach counties. In this highly competitive market, breaking news is a core part of the role, but your primary priority will be developing deep, enterprise reporting off that news. We need a journalist who can seamlessly pivot across a wide range of topics, look beyond the surface of initial reports, bring accountability to local governments, and expose key issues impacting our communities.

What you will do:

  • Consistently break stories across Broward and Palm Beach counties in a fast-paced news environment

  • Develop enterprise follow-up reporting by looking beyond initial police reports to uncover deeper issues and compelling narratives

  • Seamlessly pivot across diverse beats, including public safety, criminal justice, and local government accountability

  • Master public records

  • Cultivate reliable sources

  • Translate hard-hitting reporting into compelling stories

  • Juggle multiple assignments effectively while meeting strict deadlines

What you will bring:

  • 3+ years of reporting experience (experience with student media counts toward total)

  • Strong self-starter attitude with exceptional organizational and time-management skills

  • Proven capability to analyze public records and build a strong network of sources

  • Demonstrated success in enterprise reporting and compelling news writing

  • Preferred additional skills in data analysis or visualization, shooting and editing field video, or leveraging social media to build a beat audience

Who we are:

The South Florida Sun Sentinel, founded in 1910, serves Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties. Our mission is to deliver the truth every day. We bring you the stories that matter most, written without bias, so you can make informed decisions. The Sun Sentinel's Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism works to protect your interests, help navigate your daily life and tell the stories that connect you with the communities where you live and work. We are headquartered in Deerfield Beach, Florida, and are part of Tribune Publishing Company.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation

  • Travel - This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, in-person training sessions and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed

  • Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
