Distinguishing Features of Work The Wichita City Attorney's Office is seeking a dynamic and experienced legal professional to serve as an Assistant City Attorney (Lead Prosecutor). This critical leadership position is responsible for managing the prosecution of misdemeanor traffic and criminal cases in Municipal Court while providing guidance and oversight to a team of prosecutors.

As the City's lead courtroom presence for municipal-level criminal matters, this role offers an opportunity to impact community safety and uphold the rule of law through skilled courtroom advocacy, mentorship, and strategic legal counsel. This position works closely with law enforcement and City departments, providing legal interpretation, supporting diversion programs, and ensuring fair, effective legal proceedings.

Bargaining Unit: Employees Council **Posting may close at any time ** Examples of Work Performed Prosecutes police and traffic cases, drug cases, domestic violence and DUI cases, mental health and criminal cases. Interviews complainants and witnesses, determines facts relative to the prosecution of cases in municipal court and issues complaints. Represents the City in criminal appeals to the District Court.

Confers with and advises Police Officers and other City officials as to legal interpretation of City ordinances. Represents the City in prosecuting building, health and zoning ordinance violations. Conducts research and composes legal opinions, ordinances and other legal documents as assigned.

Review applications and provide recommendation for acceptance of applicants for department diversion programs. Analyze facts and review police reports to evaluate cases for probable cause, errors and other prosecution decisions. Participates in interdepartmental meetings involving the Municipal Court, Prosecution issues, or as may be assigned.

Provides legal counsel and opinions to the Wichita Police Department on prosecutorial issues. Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle. These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive.

Other related duties may be assigned as needed Requirements of Work Working knowledge of the principles and procedures of criminal law, especially as they relate to the prosecution of municipal ordinance violators. Working knowledge of pleading techniques and court practice, and skill in the presentation of cases in court. Working knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence.

Working knowledge of municipal laws and ordinances. Working knowledge of municipal court methods and procedures and skill in the prosecution of cases heard in court. Ability to analyze legal documents and instruments.

Ability to perform self-directed research and analysis as required for effective prosecution. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other Departments, representatives of other organizations, and the public. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license. An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace. Experience and Training Required Experience and Training Graduation from an accredited school of law.

Must be currently admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of the State of Kansas. Three (3) years of experience practicing law in the areas of criminal prosecution, municipal law, or administrative law, OR serving as a legal research assistant to a court or administrative tribunal. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Attainment of passing scores on pre-employment tests. Candidates with the required experience and training will be required to take the following assessments: Logical Reasoning - Decision Making Office Reasoning Sample - People Management Office Reasoning Sample - Problem Solving Preferred Experience and Training One (1) year of experience supervising attorneys, legal interns, or support staff in a prosecutorial, judicial, or municipal setting. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
