Tree Crew Worker

Job Description

This posting will be used to fill a Full Time, Permanent, Tree Crew Worker position within the Department of Public Works with Anne Arundel County Government. This is skilled manual labor in the performance of trimming and removing trees and performing other maintenance worker duties as required. Semi-skilled and limited skilled work is of a physically demanding nature, with a requirement of climbing trees and working in an aerial bucket, of the tree truck.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK Work involves performance of manual tasks involved in trimming and removing of trees along the County right of ways, in addition to those tasks performed by Maintenance Worker II. Work is performed with some independence, under the supervision of a superior, and personal performance of the more skilled and hazardous duties of tree climbing.

Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Checks and maintains tools and equipment; diagnoses problems and determines correct procedures. Participates in special tree work and in general maintenance of roads and drains; oversees and performs such tasks as cutting, pruning, and trimming trees; removes limbs and trees; removes and disposes of brush, foliage, stumps, and trees. Performs tree work from elevated bucket; climbs trees using spikes, ropes, safety belts, and ladders; oversees observance of safety precautions in all operation. Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Considerable knowledge of tree work and the use of safety devices, and hand and power tools, and equipment, related to tree work. Knowledge of principles, practices and materials used for tree trimming and removal. Ability to perform skilled work in trimming, pruning, and felling trees. Good physical condition with no restrictions to working at high elevations. Ability to climb trees. Skill in the use and maintenance of chain saw and related equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Sufficient education to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Experience: One (1) year of experience in climbing and trimming of trees. Additional Requirements: As determined by area of assignment, a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license.

Supplemental Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with the following: 1. Maryland Roadside Tree Care Expert License. 2. MOT Traffic Control Manager Certification.
