Role Overview

The Research Cocoa Science Contractor supports high-complexity R&D projects and leads smaller initiatives under guidance. This role involves hands-on experimentation, analytical testing, pilot plant operations, and maintaining strict food safety and sanitation standards. The position requires strong organizational skills, technical competency, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities1. Laboratory & Pilot Plant Operations (35%)
  • Operate lab, pilot plant, and analytical equipment
  • Conduct food characterization and experimental trials
  • Prepare snacks and confectionery products for testing
  • Support pilot plant operations and equipment setup
2. Data Collection & Documentation (35%)
  • Record experimental observations accurately
  • Perform basic data analysis and interpretation
  • Maintain detailed documentation and reports
  • Ensure data integrity and compliance with standards
3. Lab Maintenance & Sanitation (20%)
  • Clean and maintain lab and pilot plant equipment
  • Ensure compliance with food safety (GMP, FSMA) standards
  • Maintain organized and safe workspaces
4. Inventory Management (10%)
  • Track lab supplies and materials
  • Manage inventory and place orders as needed
Specific Role Focus Areas
  • Benchtop product development using food processing techniques
  • Planning and executing lab tests (setup, run, cleanup)
  • Supporting scale-up trials and sample production
  • Assisting in pilot plant testing and operations
  • Collaborating with project leaders on execution plans
  • Data entry, basic calculations, and use of software tools

Minimum Qualifications & Skills
  • Experience working in a laboratory or pilot plant environment
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to follow formulation sheets and procedures
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for data entry and report generation
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to change
  • General knowledge of food safety standards (GMP, FSMA)
Industry Experience
  • Experience with food processing equipment and instrumentation
  • Exposure to cocoa/chocolate processing (preferred)
  • Familiarity with food characterization techniques
Physical & Safety Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
