JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Groundskeeper Status: Part time
Exemption Status: Non-exempt
Department/Location: St. Augustine Catholic High School / Tucson
Primary Function: Under the direction of the School President and Facilities/Grounds leadership, the employee is responsible for athletic grounds maintenance, irrigation monitoring and maintenance, landscaping support, and general facilities duties as assigned. The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, “…Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” (Eph. 4:1)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the Church's spiritual and pastoral mission and the mission of St. Augustine Catholic High School.
  • Shall abide by Catholic principles in the employee’s professional and private life and shall govern his/her professional and private life in strict accordance with Catholic morals and principles to demonstrate complete adherence to Catholic moral strictures
  • Perform athletic grounds and landscaping duties as assigned
  • Maintain and detail athletic fields, field perimeters, surrounding areas, and other designated campus grounds
  • Monitor, operate, inspect, and perform routine maintenance on irrigation systems
  • Identify and address irrigation issues, including leaks, broken sprinkler heads, clogged or improperly functioning heads, and other minor irrigation problems
  • Perform basic irrigation repairs and adjustments as qualified
  • Perform weed control, removal, and management as directed
  • Apply fertilizer, weed control products, and other approved grounds treatments in accordance with safety requirements
  • Assist with seasonal preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and surrounding grounds
  • Conduct routine inspections of athletic grounds and identify potential safety, maintenance, or appearance concerns before they become larger problems
  • Assist with general landscaping duties, including trimming, planting, cleanup, tree and shrub maintenance, and other grounds-related tasks as assigned
  • Assist the Grounds Lead with campus grounds maintenance and larger grounds projects
  • Assist with preparation, set-up, and breakdown for sporting and special events
  • Complete routine grounds, irrigation, and maintenance work as detailed on work schedules and as directed by the Facilities/Grounds leadership
  • Correctly identify and make general repairs to minor grounds, irrigation, and facility-related problems within the employee’s training and qualifications
  • Report immediately any damage or defects of athletic fields, grounds, irrigation systems, facilities, equipment, and other school property
  • Assist with general maintenance, repair, and campus improvement projects as assigned
  • Drive motorized equipment as required for maintenance duties
  • Maintain a supply of grounds, irrigation, and maintenance supplies and equipment; properly account for materials and equipment
  • Maintain security of buildings, equipment, tools, and grounds equipment
  • Comply with safety regulations as required; maintain a safe working environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity; normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift a minimum of 45 lbs. as required in a normal grounds and maintenance environment.
Required Activities: Walking, sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, talking, handling, hearing, carrying, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, and operating grounds maintenance equipment.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Must have a working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of the Diocese and Catholic Church; must be in full communion with the Catholic Church
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written; excellent human relations and interpersonal skills
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, school community, and the general public
  • Must be a self-starter; well organized; perform multiple tasks simultaneously and work with a sense of urgency
  • Ability to work independently and identify grounds, irrigation, and maintenance needs without waiting for direction
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; punctuality is a must at all times; ability to travel locally as required; hours may vary depending on the needs of the school
  • Professional bearing; clean and neat personal appearance
  • Ability to successfully pass a background, criminal history, and credit history check
  • Be able to read directions, equipment instructions, and label safety warnings; must be safety-conscious
  • Knowledge, skills and experience in handling grounds maintenance equipment, irrigation systems, landscaping tools, and general maintenance tools
  • Ability and willingness to learn new grounds, irrigation, landscaping, and maintenance skills as needed
Education and Experience:
  • High school graduate or equivalent education preferred
  • Previous experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, maintenance, custodial work, construction, or a similar position preferred
  • Experience operating landscaping or grounds maintenance equipment preferred
