Job description

Job Summary
The Box Shop Technician is responsible for constructing, assembling, repairing, and maintaining wooden tree boxes used to support and transport large specimen trees throughout Moon Valley Nurseries' farm operations. This role utilizes woodworking tools, equipment, and construction techniques to build custom boxes that meet company standards for quality, durability, and safety.
The Box Shop Technician works closely with Farm Management, Production Teams, and Equipment Operators to ensure tree boxes are built accurately and efficiently to support production schedules and inventory demands. This position requires strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to safely operate woodworking tools and equipment in a fast-paced outdoor environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Box Construction & Assembly
  • Construct custom wooden tree boxes according to company specifications and production requirements.
  • Measure, cut, assemble, and secure lumber using hand tools, power tools, and woodworking equipment.
  • Build boxes of various sizes to accommodate different tree varieties and root ball dimensions.
  • Ensure all completed boxes meet quality, safety, and structural standards.
  • Perform repairs and modifications to existing tree boxes as needed.
  • Assist with special projects requiring custom box fabrication or design adjustments.

Woodworking & Equipment Operation
  • Safely operate woodworking equipment including saws, nail guns, drills, impact drivers, sanders, and other construction tools.
  • Maintain accuracy when measuring, cutting, and assembling materials.
  • Inspect tools and equipment regularly to ensure safe operation.
  • Report equipment issues, maintenance needs, or safety concerns to management.
  • Follow all company procedures related to tool usage and equipment operation.

Material Management
  • Organize and maintain lumber, hardware, fasteners, and construction materials.

  • Mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, and move heavy materials.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and dependability.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Forklift experience is a plus but not required.

Physical requirements/Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Able to work outdoors for extended periods of time in possibly extreme conditions, including rain, heat, sun, and wind.
