Job description

Duties * You will participate in controlling and extinguishing fires by operating a hose, ladder, hydrant and/or rescuing endangered people. * You will respond as a member of a Hazardous Material Response Team to contain and control a hazardous material spill or discharge. * You will perform pre-fire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with layouts and locations of fire hazards and locations of fixed fire protection systems. * You will maintain fire station and related equipment in good condition. * You will extricate trapped victims and administer all possible emergency care and protection prior to removal. * You will verify and monitor victim's vital signs i.e., pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, respiration, etc. Requirements Conditions of employment * Must be a US Citizen. * Must be determined suitable for federal employment. * Must participate in the direct deposit pay program. * New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. The following certification levels are the minimum qualification standard for the position. Individuals must be certified at these levels before being eligible to fill the grade and/or position. * NREMT registry * Firefighter I and II * Hazmat Awareness * Hazmat Operations * Hazardous Materials Technician GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Operating firefighting tools and equipment, such as ladders, rescue tools, and nozzles, while applying fire control techniques in various environments; possess knowledge of emergency medical procedures, including patient assessment, treatment, and transport, along with performing CPR and noninvasive medical procedures; handling hazardous materials releases, using specialized protective clothing and equipment to control or stop leaks. The following certification levels are the minimum qualification standard for the position. Individuals must be certified at these levels before being eligible to fill the grade and/or position. * NREMT registry * Firefighter I and II * Hazmat Awareness * Hazmat Operations * Hazardous Materials Technician * Driver/Operator - Pumper (Must obtain within 1 year) * Driver/Operator - Aerial (Must obtain within 1 year) Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. You will be required to obtain and maintain a current National Registry of Emergency Technicians (NREMT) registry certification. You will be required to participate in the Department of Defense Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program. You will be required to maintain compliance with NFPA 1582 (Fire Fighter Physical Medical Evaluations), NFPA 1583 (Fire Fighter Fitness Program Requirements . You will be required to participate in the mandatory F&ESD Physical Fitness Program to maintain a level and degree of fitness needed to perform all duties. You will be required to obtain and maintain current FIREFIGHTER certifications: Hazardous Material Awareness, Hazardous Material Operations, and Hazardous Materials Technician. You will be required to possess and maintain certification a FIREFIGHTER I by the Department of Defense (DoD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or ProBoard. You will be required to possess and maintain certification a FIREFIGHTER II by the Department of Defense (DoD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or ProBoard. You will be required to possess and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. You must possess a current National Registry or State Certification as Emergency Medical Technician (EMD. You will be required to obtain and maintain an Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) certification. You may be required to work in high elevations and/or below ground in confined workspaces. You will be required to work hours and conditions under close contact with supervisors for long periods of time. You will be subject to adverse weather and/or harsh working conditions; burns, smoke inhalation, noxious fumes, falling materials, and explosions. You will be exposed to communicable diseases, unsanitary conditions and traumatic injuries. You will be required to possess and maintain the physical stamina, agility, and mental stability to work under conditions where intense periods of physical exertion and mental stress, under adverse conditions, may be encountered. This position has a maximum entry age of 37. Candidates that will be older than 37 at the time of appointment will require an age waiver. Education This job does not have an education qualification requirement. Additional information This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. Work schedule consists of 72 hours per week/144 hours per pay period (firefighter hours differ, not all are 72 hours per week). Employee may be recalled to duty outside normal working hours.
