Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Scientist.

The NYU Grossman School of Medicine is at the forefront of scientific inquiry and is among the nations top research universities receiving National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding. A research scientist is currently needed to facilitate a NIH-funded study investigating micro- and nanoplastic (MNP) particle accumulation in mammalian tissues in collaboration with Rutgers and Columbia Universities. This project will be investigating MNP accumulation using state-of-the-art methods and is a unique opportunity for any scientist with an interest in developing expertise in the most up to date science in MNP particle analysis. The scientist will be responsible for collaborating with the Principal Investigators (PI) and working independently within the scientific framework of the PI's laboratory.

Job Responsibilities:

As the Research Scientist, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the third aim of the project, investigating MNP accumulation in human samples. Tissues and excretions will be harvested at autopsy, and measured, cut, and stored by the research scientist for transport to the NYU Center for Biospecimen Research & Development (CBRD). Specimens will then be processed and frozen at CBRD for later shipping to external labs for analysis. Data analysis will be completed in conjunction with a team at Columbia University. Opportunities exist to visit and collaborate with external laboratories. This position requires flexibility due to the unscheduled nature of autopsy lab activity. The research scientist will be responsible for preparing containers for specimen collection, overseeing activities in the autopsy lab, assisting with dissection of some autopsy samples and transportation of specimens to CBRD, and reporting of any related supply issues. The scientist will also be expected to meet with the Principal Investigator(s) weekly to discuss the progress of the project and any outstanding logistical issues to be addressed. The research scientist will also coordinate with external laboratories for specimen delivery and be offered the opportunity to co-author related manuscripts.

• Autopsy lab:
  • Prepare labeled specimen containers for the next anticipated autopsy

  • Be available for autopsies when they occur. This process takes several hours and occurs a

    t relatively short notice.

  • Assist with dissection of collected samples to retrieve specific anatomic structures of interest and of appropriate size and weight for analysis
  • Assist with processing equipment and preparing it for the next anticipated autopsy

• Project coordination:
  • Coordinate and confirm sample transport to external universities

  • Participate in weekly meetings with the Principal Investigator and bi-weekly meetings with 

    all co-investigators on the project

  • Ongoing communication with the data team at Columbia University to determine project 

    needs for ongoing sample collection 

• Career development:
  • The research scientist will be invited to participate in manuscript preparation and additional related grant applications depending on the level of interest
  • Opportunities to present research findings externally will also be available

• Continuous Learning: Position requires ongoing continuing education in all areas of research development. It is expected that the employee demonstrates proof of ongoing research education on a yearly basis. Training programs are provided through the SOM.

• Participates in special projects and performs other duties as required.

• Human Subjects' Research - If applicable, updates and submits necessary documents required by the NYU Institutional Board (IRB), NYU Office of Clinical Trials and any other appropriate parties in order to obtain approval to conduct human subjects research. Secures accurate signatures and forwards documents and/or forms to appropriate destination.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have a MS degree and 2-4 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in biospecimen collection and lab processing.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $58,500.00 - $81,000.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
