SUMMARY

TheTransportation Operations Manager is responsible for supervising the day-to-daydispatch and delivery operation supporting a multi-temperature grocerydistribution center. This role manages transportation associates and dispatchexecution, coordinates third-party carrier performance, oversees yard andequipment activity through the Yard Management System (YMS), and monitorsroutes and deliveries through Omnitracs and other transportation systems. Theposition is accountable for safe, accurate, and timely execution; reliabletransportation data; effective customer and carrier communication; andconsistent On-Time Delivery performance. The facility supports day and/ornight, weekend, and holiday shifts.

ESSENTIALDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESDispatchand Delivery Operations:
  • Supervise and coordinate daily dispatchoperations for chill, frozen, dry, and other assigned grocery deliveryactivity.
  • Ensure loads are dispatched in alignment withplanned warehouse dispatch times, carrier dispatch times, customer deliverywindows, and route requirements.
  • Monitor drivers and routes throughout theshift, identify loads at risk of late delivery, and coordinate timely recoveryactions with carriers, drivers, stores, and internal partners.
  • Validate delivery exceptions, latedeliveries, arrival and departure times, and reason codes before On-TimeDelivery reporting is finalized.
  • Ensure dispatch associates maintain accurateload status, route notes, delivery exceptions, and customer communication inapplicable systems.
  • Coordinate with Routing, WarehouseOperations, Customer Service, Store Operations, and carriers to resolve servicedisruptions and protect customer delivery commitments
  • Maintain clear shift handoffs and communicateoutstanding loads, rollovers, equipment constraints, service risks, andunresolved issues to appropriate stakeholders.
Yardand Equipment Management:
  • Oversee daily yard and trailer activity usingYMS, including trailer location, status, availability, dock assignments, andequipment movements.
  • Ensure required yard checks and spot checksare completed, discrepancies are corrected promptly, and YMS data accuratelyreflects physical yard conditions.
  • Monitor trailer and equipment availabilityagainst daily and upcoming dispatch requirements and upscale shortages,overages, out-of-service equipment, or other constraints.
  • Coordinate with yard spotters, warehouseteams, carriers, maintenance providers, and other partners to support safe andtimely trailer movement and equipment readiness.
  • Reinforce trailer safety requirements,including proper chocking, equipment condition reporting, and escalation ofunsafe or non-serviceable equipment.
Third-PartyCarrier Management:
  • Manage daily execution of third-partycarriers and serve as an operational point of contact for dispatch, equipment,driver, service, and delivery issues.
  • Confirm carriers have appropriate driver andequipment coverage to meet scheduled dispatch and customer deliveryrequirements.
  • Monitor carrier On-Time Delivery and serviceperformance, address recurring failures, and follow up on corrective actionsand countermeasures.
  • Ensure carriers communicate driver delays,receiving issues, breakdowns, hours-of-service concerns, and other servicerisks early enough to support recovery.
  • Reinforce customer-specific deliveryexpectations with carrier partners, including assisted delivery/offloadingrequirements and other store delivery procedures.
  • Escalate unresolved carrier performance orservice issues to transportation leadership as appropriate.
TeamLeadership and Staff Scheduling:
  • Lead, supervise, and motivate transportationdispatch associates and other assigned transportation staff.
  • With respect to associates in assigned areas,either directly or through independent recommendation: hire, transfer, suspend,lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, discipline, responsiblydirect associates, and/or adjust associate complaints.
  • Prepare and maintain staff schedules andadjust coverage based on delivery volume, operational needs, absences,weekends, holidays, and business requirements.
  • Provide coaching, training, performancefeedback, and follow-up to ensure consistent execution of dispatch, deliverymonitoring, customer service, safety, and system procedures.
  • Ensure associates are trained on currentSOPs, systems, customer requirements, and operational changes, with requiredtraining documentation maintained.
TransportationSystems and Data Integrity:
  • Use Omnitracs to monitor driver location,route progress, geofence arrivals and departures, delivery status, andexceptions; investigate and correct inaccurate or missing information whenappropriate
  • Use YMS to manage yard visibility, trailerstatus, equipment location, and dock activity, and ensure system information isvalidated against actual yard conditions.
  • Maintain accurate transportation data andreporting by verifying system entries, delivery timestamps, exception codes,equipment status, and other operational information.
  • Escalate recurring system, integration,geofencing, or data-quality issues and work with internal support teams andservice providers toward resolution.
  • Use Microsoft Office and transportationreports to communicate operational status, track performance, and supportmanagement review.
CustomerService and Communication:
  • Provide timely communication to stores, StoreOperations, Customer Service, and other stakeholders regarding delivery ETAs,delays, service disruptions, and recovery plans.
  • Respond to transportation-related storeconcerns, calls, and emails; investigate delivery issues and coordinateresolution with the responsible carrier or internal team.
  • Ensure drivers and carriers escalatereceiving delays promptly so Transportation can assist with store contact anddelivery recovery.
  • Maintain professional, accurate, andsolution-oriented communication with customers, carriers, drivers, and internalbusiness partners.
Safety,Compliance, and Performance Improvement:
  • Promote and enforce safe transportation andyard practices and ensure compliance with applicable company policies,procedures, and transportation requirements.
  • Monitor hours-of-service and otherdriver-related operational constraints when they may affect safe and on-timeexecution, and coordinate appropriate recovery plans with carrier partners.
  • Identify recurring dispatch, delivery, yard,equipment, carrier, or data issues and recommend practical processimprovements.
  • Monitor operational KPIs such as On-TimeDelivery, dispatch timeliness, late-delivery causes, equipment availability,and carrier performance; use results to drive corrective action.
  • Participate in carrier service andperformance reviews and provide operational data, findings, and follow-up onassigned countermeasures.
  • Partner with Distribution Center Operationsto support the timely flow of merchandise from loading through final storedelivery.
EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, logistics, business administration, or a related field preferred; equivalent transportation or distribution experience may be considered.
  • Three to five years of transportation, dispatch, delivery, logistics, or distribution experience, including experience supervising employees or leading a dispatch operation.
  • Experience managing third-party carriers and multi-stop store delivery operations preferred; grocery, retail, chill, frozen, or multi-temperature distribution experience strongly preferred.
  • Working experience with transportation technology such as Omnitracs, TMS, YMS, telematics, route monitoring, or comparable systems preferred.
SKILLS:
  • Strong leadership, coaching, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage a fast-paced dispatch operation and make timely decisions while balancing safety, service, cost, and operational priorities.
  • Knowledge of dispatch, route execution, yard and trailer management, carrier management, delivery windows, and transportation exception handling.
  • Ability to interpret transportation data, identify trends, validate exceptions, and use KPIs to drive performance improvement.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

This position has a desk in a distribution center office but requires regular presence in transportation dispatch, yard, dock, and warehouse operating areas. The office is situated in a warehouse office setting and climate-controlled environment. Operational support may require work throughout a standard multi-temperature warehouse and outdoor yard environment where temperatures vary considerably:

  • General indoor warehouse and outdoor yard temperatures are partially dependent upon weather conditions.
  • Chill/Produce refrigerated coolers are maintained at 40-45 degrees.
  • Frozen refrigerated coolers are maintained between 0 and 25 degrees.
  • Some cold environments require special uniforms or personal protective equipment.
