Duties are carried out by monitoring commercial traffic from mobile patrol units throughout Nova Scotia providing coverage on all classes of highways on a twenty-four-hour basis.

This position contributes to the development and/or implementation of policies and procedures, as well as occupational health and safety principles for the Department's Commercial Vehicle inspection, enforcement, and compliance programs.
As the Inspector, you are responsible to:
- ensure compliance with a wide range of legislation and regulations related to the protection of our infrastructure by developing and implementing an area enforcement operational plan applicable to commercial vehicles and drivers.

This may involve assisting with applying for permits; conducting inspections of vehicles; conducting onsite inspections; investigating incidents of non-compliance and taking the appropriate action.
- respond to requests of local police forces under the direction of management. You typically assist in investigations by examining mandatory documents and records, inspecting the vehicle(s) and cargo, and ensuring the vehicle is in compliance with any legislation specific to commercial motor vehicles.
- assist local police force and Department of Public Works (DPW) with traffic control operations at motor vehicle collisions and restrict access to portions of the highway system due to inclement weather and exceptional moves at the request of management. This includes closures of the Canso Causeway, Tantramar Marsh/Cobequid Pass, and other portions of Nova Scotia's highway system.
- use measuring tools, platform scales and general operating supplies. Responsible for safe storage of evidence in respect to court cases to guarantee continuity. Responsible for safe storage, maintenance, and use of Department-issued personal protection equipment.
