What is a transit operator?

Transit operators are professionals responsible for driving and operating public transportation vehicles such as buses, streetcars, or trains. Their main duties include safely transporting passengers along predetermined routes, adhering to schedules, and providing excellent customer service. They are also responsible for collecting fares, assisting passengers with disabilities, and ensuring the safety of everyone on board. Transit operators play a crucial role in keeping cities connected and helping people commute efficiently.

What are some common challenges transit operators face during their shifts and how can they effectively manage them?

Transit Operators often encounter challenges such as managing tight schedules, handling unexpected traffic or route changes, and ensuring passenger safety and satisfaction. They may also deal with difficult situations like fare disputes, unruly passengers, and inclement weather. Effective communication skills, patience, and a thorough understanding of transit protocols help operators navigate these challenges. Operators typically receive ongoing training and support from supervisors and colleagues, which fosters a collaborative work environment and helps address issues as they arise.

Job description

Job Title: Forklift Operator

Job Description

This role involves operating multiple types of forklifts and using RF scanning technology to accurately pick, move, and stage products within a large, safety-focused warehouse. You will support daily shipping, receiving, and inventory activities while maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate reach trucks and sit-down counterbalance forklifts to move, store, and retrieve pallets and cases safely and efficiently.
  • Use RF scan guns to perform order picking, case picking, bulk picking, and product put-away in accordance with warehouse procedures.
  • Load and unload trailers and trucks, ensuring products are handled carefully and staged correctly for shipping and receiving.
  • Perform shipping and receiving tasks, including verifying counts, scanning products, and updating the warehouse management system (WMS).
  • Carry out case picking and full pallet (bulk) picking, ensuring accuracy in product selection and placement.
  • Stage products using RF units by scanning items, placing them in designated locations, and confirming transactions in the system.
  • Support inventory control activities by following WMS processes and maintaining accurate stock locations and counts.
  • Use dock stockers and power pallet trucks (where qualified) to support put-away, staging, and replenishment tasks.
  • Handle heavy lifting as required for case picking, loading, and unloading tasks while following safe lifting practices.
  • Start in case picking to learn product lines and processes, then progressively take on receiving and bulk responsibilities as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, following all safety rules, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with warehouse team members and supervisors to meet productivity, accuracy, and safety targets.
  • Adapt to different warehouse locations or areas as required to support operational needs.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of experience operating a reach truck in a warehouse environment.
  • At least 1 year of experience operating a sit-down forklift (counterbalance).
  • Proficiency using RF scan guns or RF units for order picking, case picking, and inventory transactions.
  • Hands-on experience with shipping and receiving processes, including loading and unloading trailers.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate sit-down forklifts, dock stockers, and perform case picking and order picking tasks.
  • Knowledge of warehouse management systems (WMS) and basic understanding of inventory workflows.
  • Experience working in a warehouse environment, including pallet movement, staging, and product put-away.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting safely as part of daily warehouse operations.
  • Comfort working on an afternoon shift (e.g., approximately 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.).
  • Reliable transportation to a facility that is not serviced by public transit.

Why Work Here?

You join a long-term, contract-to-hire opportunity in an organization that values stability and growth. The company offers consistent work and can reassign high-performing team members to other locations if volume changes, helping you maintain steady employment. Many workers remain on contract for extended periods because the organization recognizes and retains strong performers. You benefit from an easygoing, transparent, and supportive environment where communication is open and audits and performance information are shared openly. Annual wage increases and promotion opportunities from within create a clear path for career advancement.

Work Environment

You will work in a large warehouse with wide aisles dedicated to storing and distributing. The facility is clean, safety-oriented, and operates with an open-door policy, where audit results and safety information are posted in the lunchroom for everyone to view. About 70% of the operation focuses on bulk (full pallet) handling, while 30% involves case picking, giving you exposure to both pallet and case-level work. The team relies heavily on RF scanning technology for order picking, staging, and put-away, and uses equipment such as reach trucks, dock stockers, power pallet trucks (single), and sit-down forklifts. New associates typically start in case picking to learn the product range and processes before moving into receiving and bulk responsibilities. You will work an afternoon shift, approximately 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., alongside a warehouse team of around 10 staff members per shift. The facility is located in an area without public transit service, so you need your own transportation. The environment emphasizes cleanliness, safety, teamwork, and clear communication, with a structured yet approachable culture.
