School Bus Driver - Multiple Positions - 2026-2027
Will be reporting to District Office, but servicing District-Wide
Compensation:  starting rate of $27.06/hour based on 2025-2026 salary scale

POSITION OVERVIEW
Under direction of the Supervisor of Transportation Services, the Bus Driver drives any type and size of school bus that may be operated by the school district for the safe transport of students to and from school and school-related functions on regularly scheduled routes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position.  This is not a comprehensive listing of all the responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:
 













  • Meet the requirements of the regular daily bus route for the purpose of transporting children to and from school in a safe and timely fashion.
  • Follow all State and Federal rules and regulations.  Adherence to the procedures, policies, and practices presented in the "Bus Driver and Bus Attendants Handbook."
  • Complete safety and operational check of the school bus and any special equipment before all trips. Report any malfunctions concerning the bus and/or special equipment.
  • Keep the buses clean and in an orderly condition.
  • Be fair and firm with discipline of your passengers and be mindful of the safety of student riders when they are approaching, entering, riding, and leaving the bus.
  • Knowledge of rules pertaining to the transportation of school children with responsibility to advise the students on the bus of the rules and the infractions.
  • Responsibility to report any hazardous conditions observed along the scheduled bus route and route deviations.
  • Responsibility to maintain and rigidly adhere to the bus route schedule for both pickup and return home.
  • Responsibility to be courteous, pleasant and demonstrate respect for all students, school personnel, parents and the general motoring public.
  • Responsibility to immediately report unusual incidents or events and to follow the directions provided by the Dispatcher.
  • Report to work as scheduled or before in order to prepare the bus and start the route on time regardless of weather conditions.
  • Boards, transports, and discharges passengers.
  • Responsibility to maintain and rigidly adhere to the bus route schedule for both pickup and return home
  • May lift handicapped passengers and assist passengers into and out of bus as required by Transportation Services Department policy and procedure.
  • May operate a mechanized wheelchair lift.
  • Ensure that students and equipment are safely fastened in seats, when necessary.
  • Maintains and updates current student and trip routes.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Below are the qualifications for this position:
 


  • Be at least 18 years of age and in possession of a valid driver's license for at minimum of one year.
  • Class A or Class B Commercial Drivers' License with passenger and school bus endorsement. Will assist with obtaining proper license and permits.
  • No more than three (3) points on driver record.
  • No conviction for Driving Under Influence of Alcohol or Drugs, or suspension, revocation, or license disqualification for moving violations, in the past five years.
  • Must not have ever been convicted of a Class A or Class B felony, or a felony based on causing death, a felony sexual offense, or a felony against public administration.
  • Must not have had any portion of the sentence for any other felony conviction extending into the last five years.
  • Must not have ever been convicted of any crime against a child.
  • Must not have ever been convicted of any drug-related crime.
  • Must pass a successful pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must have TB testing (initially) and school bus driver physical (initially and annually).
  • Previous employer verification and work history of all driver positions in past 10 years.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work may be performed at various times of day or night, under various conditions, including, but not limited to inclement weather.

  • All persons employed by the Appoquinimink School District are required to submit a criminal background check and a tuberculosis test.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide the following:  proper identification (Social Security Card and Driver's License), documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.A., completion of I-9 form, and completion of paperwork for the Delaware Child Protection Registry.
