As a Transit Police Officer III or IV, you will:

• Patrol the total transit system, including facilities, within UTA service areas.

• Provide a visible peace officer presence within those jurisdictions.

• Inspect passengers in the systems for proof of fare and aid transit patrons as necessary while always maintaining an active public safety presence.

• Monitor public behavior for violations of UTA ordinances and Utah law without direct supervision.

• Exercise considerable discretion responding to specific situations to protect patrons and the public.

• Maintain general law and order, suppress criminal activity, respond to calls for service, make arrests, complete case reports, and issue both civil and criminal citations.

• Testify in court as needed and coordinate public safety activities with local law enforcement agencies.

• Assess potential risk to public safety and recommend opportunities for loss prevention.

• May be assigned by UTA Public Safety management to work in varied functional areas; these could include serving as a trainer in a limited area such as defensive tactics, OC spray, Taser, firearms, or other assignments as needed and required.

• Other duties as assigned

This is a Career-Ladder position (meaning, it can be filled by either a Transit Police Officer III or IV, depending on experience).

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/TRAINING

• 5 or more years in law enforcement or corrections. 

• Demonstrate superior interpersonal communication skills and be able to exercise discretion to assess and take appropriate steps to protect patrons and/or employees against potentially threatening situations. 

• Officers will be required to carry a firearm and other duty equipment. 

• Candidates must be Utah P.O.S.T. certified as a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) as described within the limits of state statutes or is currently certifiable as a Utah LEO.

• Have a valid Utah driver's license, with no more than 4 moving violations in the past 3 years. Cannot have any convictions of driving under the influence of alcohol, any drug, or the combined influence of any alcohol or any drug within the last 5 years. 

•  This job requires regular and predictable attendance.    

Background Check Requirements

• Have no convictions for a civil or criminal offense involving dishonesty, unlawful sexual conduct, physical violence to include domestic violence, DUI, or unlawful sale or possession of a controlled substance, or a criminal conviction involving a felony. (Take out the within 5 years, a DV or felony is an automatic disqualification, POST will not certify them)

• As a Public Transit Organization, UTA is required to conduct background screening on all applicants we offer employment.  This background screening will include a criminal background check and FTA drug and alcohol screening.

• Because this position is in Law Enforcement, employment may be contingent on passing a more comprehensive background investigation, including:

• • Psychological testing

  • In person reference and acquaintance interview

  • Prior employment history

  • Physical Exam

  • Motor vehicle history investigation

  • BCI Criminal History

Pay Rate: 

Transit Police Officer III – $31.30 - $37.55 per hour, depending on experience

Transit Police Officer IV – $35.24 - $42.26 per hour, depending on experience
