Transit Engineer information

What is a transit engineer?

Transit engineers are professionals who design, plan, and oversee the construction and maintenance of public transportation systems such as subways, light rail, and bus networks. They work to ensure that these systems are safe, efficient, and comply with relevant regulations and standards. Transit engineers collaborate with urban planners, government agencies, and contractors to improve mobility, reduce congestion, and enhance the commuter experience in urban areas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a transit engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Transit Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or transportation engineering, often supported by a bachelor's degree and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, GIS systems, and transportation modeling tools is typically required. Strong project management, communication, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate across teams and address complex transit challenges. Mastery of these skills ensures the safe, efficient, and sustainable design and operation of public transportation systems.

What are some common challenges transit engineers face when coordinating with multiple stakeholders on large infrastructure projects?

Transit Engineers often work on complex projects that require collaboration with government agencies, contractors, consultants, and community groups. One common challenge is aligning the diverse priorities and timelines of these stakeholders while ensuring compliance with regulations and safety standards. Effective communication, project management, and negotiation skills are essential to navigate differing expectations and keep projects on track. Being adaptive and proactive in addressing concerns can help streamline decision-making and minimize delays.

Transit Engineers focus on designing and maintaining public transportation systems, working closely with transit agencies. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, working on various infrastructure projects. Both roles require similar credentials and often overlap in urban development projects, but Transit Engineers specialize in transit-specific systems.

Job description

Robots are taking over the world, and if that excites you, then join the revolution!   We are the worlds first Cloud Robotics Platform. At Synthiam, we live and breathe robotics and we’re on a mission to share our passion worldwide. We imagine, design, and create powerful robot technologies used by customers across 85 countries. Our robot platform assists enterprise development and educates people of all ages, allowing everyone to embrace robotic technology.   We’re a mature start-up, with significant demand and ready for the next phase of growth and evolution. Now, we’re looking for you: our new .Net Core Web Developer (Intermediate)   Who are you? You’re an experienced professional with a portfolio of successful high traffic .Net websites & MySql database development, ready for a new role in the exciting robotics industry.   You’re a hands-on, active problem solver who focuses on efficient programming and tidy code structure. You are goal-oriented at all times.   You eat and sleep C# and MySql programming to solve problems and express yourself through creative use of CSS, JavaScript and HTML. By following Synthiam’s unified coding structure and style, you understand the value of planning for the future. All code changes and additions you make are meaningful toward adding desired functionality, repairing bugs, securing against vulnerabilities, and optimizing performance. If that sounds like you, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.   As our new .Net Core Web Developer (Intermediate), your goal will be to oversee Synthiam's primary website, web services, and internal administration web interface. You will spend much of your time programming in C#, JavaScript, HTML and CSS with a strong understanding of MySql and web security.    You will be responsible for working with our CTO and software architect to plan development based on prepared outcome requirements. You will be involved in our robot platform planning sessions and participate in the continued unification of our user software to the online web application via web services.   You’ll use Visual Studio to develop code-behind in C# with front-end HTML/CSS and JavaScript in sandbox environment. Once pushed to an internal staging server, you will present QA & security testing scenarios that cover functionality affected by recent code change/additions. You will then have the exciting responsibility of pushing the changes live to our public servers for the world to experience your coding wizardry! We’re always looking for new ways to improve efficiency of server CPU usage – always optimizing algorithms and library performance. We strive on setting standards for robot development user experience.   The Details:   This is a full-time, permanent position working in our Calgary office. You’ll typically work Monday to Friday, 9 am – 5 pm (with flexibility to urgently fix bugs or patch security vulnerabilities). Our business complex offers a shuttle service to Chinook Station, so we’re accessible by public transit.   We offer a competitive salary that will be commensurate with your experience, benefits, and standard vacation time. Have you seen Synthiam's Calgary HQ office? We also offer a supportive environment to meet your tech startup needs, such as a video game arcade, pinball machines and telepresence robots to attend morning meetings when you were up too late coding.   Working at Synthiam:   We’re a close-knit group who genuinely enjoy working together. We’re casual, fun, and relaxed. We have comfortable hang-out areas in our bright, modern office, and pinball machines and arcade games. We often spend time together outside of work, grabbing drinks or watching movies after a long day.   We value your autonomy– working here means having the freedom to come up with creative solutions, and then being able to implement them.   There’s tons of room for growth at Synthiam as we continue to expand. We can’t wait to meet you.   Qualifications: * Experience creating web applications as a .Net web developer, and overseeing a company’s primary website, web services, and internal administration web interface * Significant experience with and knowledge of: MySQL, C#, CSS/HTML/HTML5/JavaScript, REST Web services and JSON * Experience with QA and security testing * Experience with Agile development and a strong understanding of Agile methodologies * Experience with and excellent understanding of object-oriented software design  * Experience designing and deploying complex MySQL queries and relational database design * At least 3 years experience with Linq and Model View Controller models of development * Degree or diploma in computer science, software development, or related (an asset)   Application Process:   Our online application will give you the option to apply to this role as a complete person – not just a resume. The application will assess your qualifications, personality traits and workplace preferences, and should take 10 to 15 minutes to complete. After submitting, you'll receive an email inviting you to log in and view your assessment results.   We value diversity and inclusion and encourage all qualified people to apply. If we can make this easier through accommodation in the recruitment process, please contact us with the “Help” button in the application.   We will review applications, with priority given to those who have completed the assessment, and look forward to hearing from you.
