TRANSIT DRIVER - A:SHIWI TRANSIT
NON EXEMPT - LEVEL 5
REGULAR/FT
SALARY: $16.33
GENERAL DEFINITION: Operate transit service vehicles over fixed routes and that may deviate upon request (as directed by Dispatch) to specified destinations according to time schedules, complying with traffic regulations to ensure passengers have a smooth and safe ride to and from designated locations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Transit Manager
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
DUTIES:
Operates transit buses over fixed routes that deviate accordance with assigned schedules and under direction from dispatch.
  • Park vehicles at loading areas so that passengers can board.
  • Board and discharge passengers at designated bus stops and as directed by dispatch.
  • Advise passengers to be seated and orderly while on vehicles.
  • Assist passengers, such as elderly or disabled individuals, on and off bus, ensure they are seated properly.
  • Operate wheelchair lift when necessary and to secure passengers' wheelchairs to restraining devices to stabilize wheelchairs during trip.
  • Communicate with Dispatch to report accidents, emergencies, schedule delays, equipment failure and/or unusual circumstances.
  • Ensures passenger safety by operating vehicles in accordance with Federal and State laws.
  • Provide on-time and dependable service to the public.

Conducts pre-trip inspections on all trucks and assures trucks and equipment are in safe working conditions.
  • Performs pre-trip and return vehicle inspections.
  • Inspect vehicles and check gas, oil, and water levels prior to departure.
  • Complete a monthly maintenance report to the supervisor on status of vehicles and equipment.
  • Report vehicle equipment problems to immediate supervisor for corrective action.
  • Responsible for performing minor repairs, preventive maintenance, and servicing of equipment in accordance with established maintenance manuals and schedules.
  • Cleaning of vehicle windshields, license plates, head and tail light areas from visual obstruction.
  • Operator is subject to long periods of sitting while operating the transit vehicle.

Record information, such as cash receipts and ticket fares, and maintain log book.
  • Collect fares and transfers, issue transfers, inspect passes for validity.
  • Provides information to passengers regarding transit system.
  • Maintain written records regarding customer transactions.

Performs other duties as assigned or delegated by the immediate supervisor.
  • Collect data and complete survey forms as required.
  • May assist in training of new Operators.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be able to perform assigned duties with minimal supervision in compliance with policies and procedures. Must have good driving skills. Knowledge of local Traffic Laws, ordinances, rules and driving courtesies involved in transit operations. Principle and Practices of customer service. Comply with Americans with Disabilities Act, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Ability to read, write and make basic mathematic calculations. Ability to exercise good judgment and problem solving skills. Ability to speak fluently and converse in both Zuni and English, including ability to translate between both languages. Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions spoken or written in English. Ability to operate vehicles safely and efficiently. Ability to keep simple records. Establish and maintain good working relationships with tribal employees, outside agencies, and the general public.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or equivalent (GED) with two (2) years driving experience in public or private transit system.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES: Must have a valid New Mexico Class A, B, or C Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a B or P endorsement or (must be able to obtain a P (Passenger Endorsement) within 30 days from date of hire.) Also, must have a valid two year commercial driver's medical certificate card that is valid for at least twelve (12) months from the date of hire. No DUI/DWI convictions within the past five (5) years. Driving is an essential part of the duties.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: This position requires working non-traditional and/or odd hours, split-shifts on various days of the week including holidays. Work is primarily performed out of doors and on-board transit vehicles. While performing duties of this job, the incumbent must: Regularly hear, sit reach with hands and arms, and use leg/foot to reach or handle controls. Regularly exert physical effort. Finger and manual dexterity are regularly needed to drive non-power steering vehicles and to operate door and dispense transfers. Frequently talk, walk, and use hands to handle or feel objects or controls. Regularly to stoop, bend, and twist at the waist, lift up to 50 lbs. push, pull and climb stairs. Possess visual acuity including distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus. Regularly be exposed to fumes, odors, and moderate noise. Have a high degree of memory and concentration.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: This Position is Safety Sensitive. Incumbents will be subject to pre and post-employment drug testing in accordance with FTA regulations (49 CFR Part 40) for Safety Sensitive positions. Must undergo and successfully pass a thorough background investigation and FBI Fingerprint check. May be required to work evenings and/or weekends on occasion. Must be able to periodically lift heavy objects in the performance of job duties and assist disabled and elderly passengers on and off the transits vehicle.
