Job description

Role Summary

Akiak Technology is seeking a Senior Full Stack Developer / Technical Solution Architect to support a mission-critical federal program. This is primarily a hands-on software engineering role with responsibility for practical solution architecture.  The ideal candidate brings deep Java/Spring Boot expertise, working knowledge of React/TypeScript, and strong experience across AWS, EKS/Kubernetes, data architecture, and DevSecOps. This individual must be comfortable working directly in the codebase—designing and reviewing code, troubleshooting production issues, evaluating pipelines and infrastructure, and translating architecture decisions into working solutions.

This is not a diagram-only or governance-focused architecture role.

Key Responsibilities

Full Stack Engineering

  • Design, develop, review, troubleshoot, and enhance applications using Java, Spring Boot, React, TypeScript, REST APIs, and microservices.
  • Serve as a senior hands-on technical contributor across coding, debugging, testing, code reviews, design decisions, and production support.
  • Review code for quality, security, performance, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Build backend services using Spring Boot, Spring Data, JPA/Hibernate, and PostgreSQL.
  • Troubleshoot front-end/backend integration, API contracts, authentication/authorization, and end-to-end application issues.
  • Partner with product owners and engineers to translate requirements into practical technical solutions.

Software, Data & Integration Architecture

  • Provide hands-on architecture leadership across application modernization, microservices, APIs, integrations, data, and deployment.
  • Support modernization of Ruby/Ruby on Rails applications to Java/Spring Boot, including legacy-code assessment, service redesign, API migration, and phased implementation.
  • Lead data architecture and engineering decisions supporting migration from DynamoDB/NoSQL to PostgreSQL, including schema design, data mapping, indexing, SQL performance, and persistence changes.
  • Define practical API, integration, and Java persistence patterns using Spring Data, JPA, and Hibernate.
  • Produce lightweight, implementation-focused architecture artifacts such as solution designs, data models, interface specifications, deployment views, and Architecture Decision Records (ADRs).
  • Validate architecture decisions through code, prototypes, technical reviews, and testing.

AWS, Platform & DevSecOps

  • Design and troubleshoot cloud-native solutions using AWS, Amazon EKS, Kubernetes, Docker, Helm, Terraform, IAM, networking, and observability tools.
  • Review and troubleshoot Kubernetes manifests, Helm charts, Terraform modules, containers, and EKS deployments.
  • Partner with DevSecOps teams to strengthen CI/CD automation, security, environment consistency, deployment reliability, and rollback capabilities.
  • Support migration from GitHub Actions to Harness, improving build, test, security scanning, approvals, artifact promotion, deployment, observability, and rollback processes.
  • Support infrastructure-as-code and repeatable environment provisioning using Terraform.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience with substantial recent hands-on development responsibility.
  • Expert-level Java and Spring Boot experience, including REST APIs, microservices, testing, debugging, performance tuning, and production support.
  • Experience modernizing or migrating Ruby/Ruby on Rails applications to Java/Spring Boot.
  • Working proficiency with React and TypeScript, including front-end/backend integration.
  • Strong experience with PostgreSQL, SQL, relational data modeling, Spring Data, JPA, and Hibernate.
  • Experience with DynamoDB or comparable NoSQL technologies; DynamoDB-to-PostgreSQL migration experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS, EKS, Kubernetes, Docker, Helm, and Terraform.
  • Strong CI/CD and DevSecOps experience, including GitHub Actions and secure software delivery practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot across application code, pipelines, containers, Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code, and AWS services.
  • Understanding of OAuth 2.0, OIDC, IAM, RBAC, and modern application security patterns.
  • Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to engineers, architects, product owners, and stakeholders.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain required Public Trust or contract-specific suitability.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active DHS clearance/suitability.
  • Hands-on Harness experience, particularly CI/CD migration from GitHub Actions or another platform.
  • Direct production experience migrating DynamoDB/NoSQL to PostgreSQL.
  • Experience supporting USCIS, DHS, or other federal digital services programs.
  • Experience with FedRAMP and federal security/compliance requirements.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate level as a minimum)
  • Experience with observability, automated testing, performance engineering, and production reliability in Kubernetes/EKS environment
