Job description

Principal Java Developer
Des Moines, Iowa (Hybrid)
Schedule: 4 Days Onsite | 1 Day Remote
A well-established financial institution is seeking a Principal Java Developer to provide hands-on technical leadership across a portfolio of enterprise applications. This is the highest-level individual-contributor engineering role on the application-development team and is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, mentoring developers, and influencing architecture without moving away from hands-on technology.
This is a direct-hire position located in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. The role follows a hybrid schedule requiring four days per week onsite and one remote day.
What You Will Do
  • Design and guide enterprise application solutions using Java and the Spring ecosystem.
  • Identify gaps in the current technical landscape and drive improvements.
  • Provide architecture and solution-design leadership across concurrent projects.
  • Mentor developers and help improve the team's overall technical maturity.
  • Review technical approaches, code, integration designs, and engineering standards.
  • Develop and support RESTful services, microservices, and data-driven applications.
  • Design secure authentication and authorization solutions.
  • Lead integrations involving APIs, message queues, and third-party applications.
  • Help teams balance immediate delivery needs with long-term architecture and maintainability.
  • Serve as a senior technical escalation point when the Application Development Manager is unavailable.
  • Support critical production applications and participate in an approximately one-week-in-ten on-call rotation.
  • Collaborate with business, product, architecture, security, vendor, and engineering stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field with at least 10 years of relevant experience, or at least 12 years of equivalent professional experience.
  • Deep experience developing enterprise applications with Java 8 or later, preferably Java 11+.
  • Strong experience with the Spring ecosystem, RESTful web services, and JPA/Hibernate.
  • Architecture or solution-design experience, including authentication and authorization.
  • Experience with microservices and message-based application integration.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, or guiding developers.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, application architecture, and the software-development lifecycle.
  • Experience with automated testing, builds, integration, and deployment.
  • Experience working with CI/CD and release-management practices, preferably using GitLab.
  • Experience with SQL and data-driven application design.
  • Ability to work independently, switch between priorities, and make sound technical decisions with limited supervision.
  • Willingness to work onsite four days per week and participate in on-call support.
Additional Technical Experience
Experience with several of the following is beneficial:
  • Java EE
  • Spring Boot
  • Hibernate
  • JUnit 5
  • Mockito
  • XML
  • SQL
  • JavaScript
  • Angular
  • TypeScript
  • Node.js
  • HTML and CSS
  • Bootstrap or Foundation
  • Agile, Scrum, and Waterfall delivery methods
Preferred Experience
  • Banking, financial services, insurance, investment management, or another regulated industry.
  • Implementation or integration of third-party enterprise applications.
  • Experience with financial platforms such as SimCorp, Principia, MarkitWire, or comparable systems.
  • Production support and after-hours incident resolution.
What Makes This Opportunity Distinctive
This role offers the opportunity to remain technically hands-on while operating as a trusted technical leader. You will have significant influence over solution quality, engineering standards, developer growth, and the future direction of the application landscape, without assuming direct people-management responsibilities.
