Overview
Position Summary
Shermco is seeking a Power Systems Field Technician to support our engineering team by collecting accurate field data required for power system studies and electrical infrastructure projects.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring the quality of engineering deliverables by documenting existing electrical distribution systems, collecting equipment information, performing field verification, providing owner's representation, and supporting engineers responsible for arc flash, short circuit, protective device coordination, power quality, and electrical design projects.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working around energized electrical equipment and has practical experience safely accessing low and medium voltage electrical equipment while following all applicable electrical safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities
Field Data Collection
  • Perform detailed field surveys of electrical distribution systems.
  • Collect equipment information required for:
    • Arc Flash Studies
    • Short Circuit Studies
    • Protective Device Coordination Studies
    • Power Quality Studies
    • Electrical System Assessments
    • Medium and Low Voltage Design Projects
  • Document:
    • Equipment nameplate information
    • Protective devices
    • Breaker settings
    • Fuse sizes
    • CT/PT ratios
    • Cable sizes and lengths
    • Transformer data
    • Switchgear configurations
    • Motor control centers
    • UPS systems
    • ATS systems
    • Panelboards
    • Switchboards
  • Verify existing one-line diagrams and identify discrepancies.
  • Develop red-line markups of electrical drawings.
  • Photograph equipment and maintain organized project documentation.

Field Work
  • Safely open and inspect energized and de-energized electrical equipment in accordance with NFPA 70E and company safety procedures.

  • Perform basic electrical measurements using appropriate test equipment.
  • Work around energized equipment and install power quality meters.
  • Support engineering site investigations and troubleshooting activities.

Field Oversight / Owner's Representation
  • Serve as on-site technical representative for Shermco clients during electrical construction, equipment installation, and commissioning activities.
  • Observe and document contractor work for conformance with drawings and specifications.
  • Witness factory and field acceptance testing and verify commissioning procedures are performed per approved test plans.
  • Track and report installation progress, deficiencies, and open items to the client.
  • Review contractor red-lines, test reports, and closeout documentation for completeness.
  • Support punch list development and verification of corrective actions.

Travel
Selected individual is expected to have or perform the following:
  • a valid driver's license
  • travel to customer sites each week including overnight travel, if necessary
  • ability to work off hours and weekend outages
  • ability to pass client required background checks and drug screening

Documentation
  • Organize collected information into engineering packages.
  • Maintain accurate equipment databases.
  • Prepare field reports.
  • Upload project documentation into engineering document management systems.
  • Coordinate with engineers to resolve missing or conflicting field information.

Qualifications
Qualifications
Required
  • Associate degree in Electrical Technology or equivalent field experience.
  • 5+ years working on industrial or commercial electrical power systems.
  • Experience working with:
    • Medium Voltage Switchgear
    • Low Voltage Switchgear
    • MCCs
    • Panelboards
    • Transformers
    • Protective Relays
  • Ability to read electrical one-line diagrams.
  • Ability to identify electrical equipment in the field.
  • Working knowledge of the NEC.
  • Strong computer skills.

Preferred
  • NFPA 70E qualified person.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30.
  • Experience supporting arc flash studies.
  • Experience working with VFD's, UPS and ATS systems
  • Experience supporting SKM or ETAP studies.
  • Experience using AutoCAD.
  • NETA certification.
  • Electrical Journeyman background.
  • Experience in hospitals, pharmaceutical facilities, manufacturing, or mission-critical facilities.
