As a Trainee Offshore NDT Inspection professional, one of the main challenges is adapting to the demanding offshore environment, which can include long shifts, varying weather conditions, and living on-site for extended periods. Additionally, trainees must quickly learn to operate specialized non-destructive testing equipment safely and accurately, often under the supervision of experienced inspectors. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the role involves collaborating closely with engineers, safety personnel, and other inspection team members to ensure the integrity and safety of offshore structures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trainee offshore NDT inspection?

To thrive as a Trainee Offshore NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) Inspector, you generally need a technical background, strong attention to detail, and relevant safety and NDT training or certifications such as PCN or ASNT Level 1. Familiarity with NDT methods (like ultrasonic, radiographic, or magnetic particle testing), inspection tools, and industry safety systems is essential. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help you adapt to challenging offshore environments and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are vital for ensuring the integrity of structures and equipment, maintaining safety standards, and supporting reliable offshore operations.

What is a trainee offshore NDT inspection?

Trainee Offshore NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) Inspectors are entry-level professionals who learn to assess the integrity of structures and equipment on offshore platforms, such as oil rigs, without causing damage. Their main role is to assist experienced inspectors in performing tests like ultrasonic, radiographic, or magnetic particle inspections to detect flaws or weaknesses in materials. Trainees receive on-the-job training while gradually learning to operate specialized equipment, follow safety protocols, and document inspection results. This position is ideal for those interested in technical work, safety, and offshore environments.

This is a strong opportunity for both experienced NDT professionals and candidates who are interested in building a long-term technical career in aerospace inspection. We are hiring at multiple experience levels, from trainee through certified inspector.
Our facility operates under the NAS 410 aerospace standard, and we provide a structured path for qualified candidates to gain the required classroom training, on-the-job experience, testing, and certification support.

  • Follow approved work instructions, inspection procedures, safety requirements, and customer specifications.
  • Interpret or assist with interpretation of radiographic images based on certification level and authorization.
  • Document inspection results accurately and maintain required records.
  • Support digital radiography processes and related inspection equipment.
  • Work closely with Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Level III personnel.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, compliance, quality, and continuous improvement.

Training and Certification Path
Candidates without prior NAS 410 RT experience may begin as a trainee and progress through our internal qualification and certification process. Training may include:
  • Radiation safety training
  • Radiographic Testing Level I formal training
  • Radiographic Testing Level II formal training
  • Digital radiography formal training
  • Required on-the-job experience hours
  • Written, practical, and vision examinations
  • Ongoing mentorship from experienced NDT and Quality personnel

Trainees should expect to remain on first shift during the initial training and certification period. Depending on business needs, continued first-shift placement may be available; however, long-term assignment to second shift, third shift, or weekend shift may also be required.
What We're Looking For
We are interested in candidates with any of the following backgrounds:
  • Prior NDT experience in Radiographic Testing, Digital Radiography, Film RT, CR, DR, or related inspection methods
  • Current or previous certification under NAS 410
  • NDT certification or documented training under SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, military NDI/NDT programs, or other recognized standards
  • Aerospace, manufacturing, machining, inspection, quality, or technical trade experience
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and maintain accurate documentation
  • Willingness to complete classroom training, OJT requirements, and certification exams
  • Commitment to radiation safety, quality, and compliance requirements

Preferred Qualifications
  • NAS 410 RT Level I, Level II, or equivalent documented training and experience
  • Digital Radiography experience
  • Aerospace or aircraft engine component inspection experience
  • Familiarity with controlled manufacturing environments
  • Experience reading work instructions, inspection plans, technical specifications, or quality documentation

Why Join Us
This is more than an inspection job. It is a chance to build a specialized technical career in a highly regulated industry where quality matters. Our team supports critical components used in aerospace and energy applications, and we invest in training, certification, and long-term skill development.
You'll be joining a smaller Northern Michigan aerospace manufacturing environment where your work is visible, important, and directly connected to product quality and customer trust.
Work Environment
This position is based on-site in Harbor Springs, Michigan. The role requires working in a manufacturing and inspection environment and following all safety, quality, radiation safety, and export-control requirements.
