Job description

Job Description
Autonomously performs complex diagnostic ultrasound imaging procedures for adult and pediatric patients, under the supervision of physicians for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Knowledgeable in Abdomen (including transplanted organs), OB/GYN, Small Parts, Vascular (including grafts, incompetency exams, mappings), and Pediatric ultrasound required. Takes initiative to confirm the imaging orders by reviewing patient history and other clinical data. Utilizes advanced knowledge to perform diagnostic procedures/exams (in/outpatient, portable, OR, PACU, Shear Wave Elastography (SWE), Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS), and acquiring/rendering 3D images). Assists radiologist to record and process anatomical, pathological, and physiological sonographic data and images. Exercises independent judgment by providing a preliminary diagnosis. Expected to prepare, inject, and document CEUS when indicated. Assists physicians with lesion localization and probe placement in Ablation procedures. Accurately creates an anatomical map of lymph nodes/nodules in the neck (including prior alcohol ablation sites) for the ENT surgeon to utilize during surgery. Utilize PACS to store/retrieve images and operate the EHR system efficiently, including documenting additional charges when indicated. Overtime, on-call, weekends, overnights, and holiday shifts are required per department needs. Assist in the training of all trainees. Appropriately reprocesses transducers using High Level Disinfectant. Comply with HIPAA requirements, Joint Commission Standards, and Safe Patient Handling. Expected to be involved in the ACR and IAC accreditation processes.
Sonographers may be expected to receive additional training in multiple sub-specialty areas. OR CEUS involves scrubbing in, interpreting, and guiding vascular surgeons in the OR. Fusion entails uploading a series of CT/PET/MRI images to fuse with ultrasound, assisting with lesion localization/needle placement and potentially working on multiple ultrasound machines. Expected to follow MRI/radiation safety standards. Non-Imaging Vascular provides diagnostic exams for the peripheral vascular system including ABIs, segmental pressures/PVRs, exercising arterial study patients, TcPO2s, and monitoring for cardiac changes by reading ECGs from a 12-lead monitor. NIV also performs Tonometry and EndoPat testing. Performing IBD studies involves using grayscale, color, spectral Doppler, SWE, microvascular, and CEUS to assist in the diagnosis of intestine pathology. Prostate Seed team involves assisting the radiologist with imaging during the gold/carbon marker seed placement with/without hydrogel and assisting in the brachysuite with HDR treatments and MUPIT. This specialty also assists urologists/radiation oncologists in the OR with LDR. MSK performs and assists in exams/procedures involving muscles, nerves, joints, and tendons.

Qualifications
Must have an Associate's degree in a related field and be a graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited sonography program. Or, have an Associate's degree if a graduate of a non-CAAHEP-accredited sonography program, must hold at least one ARDMS board certification (Abdomen, OB/Gyn, or RVT) at the time of hire. Incumbents hired into the role prior to February 15, 2018, are required to meet the previous requirements of graduating from an accredited sonography program. Knowledge of Non-Imaging Vascular (NIV), Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSK), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) studies, Prostate Ultrasound, and/or CT/PET/MRI fusion is advantageous.
Must have strong communication skills involving interactions with patients, physicians, and other medical professionals. Or, have an Associate's degree if a graduate of a non-CAAHEP-accredited sonography program, must hold at least one ARDMS board certification (Abdomen, OB/Gyn, or RVT) at the time of hire. Ability to communicate preliminary findings to the Radiologists and Residents. Works independently with minimal supervision. Requires ability to think critically, make judgments, and proceed with action accordingly. Sonographers are highly encouraged to be involved in professional development. This may include presenting cases at conferences, creating posters, and/or actively participating in department committees.
Requires standing, walking, and pushing equipment for long periods of time. Requires the ability to lift or assist others with lifting patients of differing weight by mechanical lifting devices. Requires the ability to use isolation precaution techniques including using personal protective equipment.
Bachelor's degree preferred but not required.
License or Certifications:
Must be ARDMS registered (or registry eligible) in the areas of abdomen, obstetrics/gynecology (OB/GYN) and vascular technology (RVT).
Registry-eligible candidates must become ARDMS registered in abdomen within 6 months of Mayo employment.
Registry eligible candidates must become ARDMS registered in obstetrics/gynecology (OB/GYN) within 12 months of Mayo employment.
Registry-eligible candidates must become ARDMS registered in vascular technology (RVT) within 18 months of Mayo employment.
CPR/BLS Certified or obtained within 90 days of employment.
