Job description

Dewberry is hiring a SkillBridge exclusive Water/Wastewater Construction Inspector Trainee to work on projects around our Parsippany, NJ office. The position will perform a variety of field work and construction inspection related work in support of small and large infrastructure projects in the New York Metropolitan area including Hudson, Rockland and Westchester Counties. The Inspector will perform such tasks as construction inspection, collecting field data needed to progress pay applications, establishing quantity and cost estimates. Inspector must be flexible, client focused and capable of working independently under the supervision of project managers.

  • Onsite Monitoring: Oversee contractor operations to ensure adherence to plans, contract terms, and specifications, leveraging skills in attention to detail and compliance.
  • Diverse Inspections: Conduct inspections across structural, mechanical, electrical, and site improvements, coordinating effectively with team members and stakeholders.
  • Field Sketches and Reports: Create detailed field sketches and complete Survey 123 forms, ensuring accurate data capture and utilizing online tools for documentation (e.g., Blue Beam).
  • Active Participation in Meetings: Engage in pre-construction meetings, weekly progress updates, and post-construction debriefs.
  • Effective Communication: Relay construction progress, schedule changes, and issues to contractors, clients, and construction managers, ensuring that all parties are informed.
  • Field Data Logging: Accurately log all material installations and field testing activities (e.g., pressure testing, water main sampling), producing daily inspection reports as needed.
  • Collaboration with Management: Work alongside construction management in material quantity checks, pay applications, and justifications for change orders, enhancing collaborative skills.
  • Materials Testing Oversight: Document and oversee testing activities such as soil compaction and concrete field tests.
  • Safety Compliance: Advise contractors on safety procedures and recommend improvements, reinforcing the commitment to safety standards.

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent required.
  • Associate's Degree in Construction Management or a related field preferred but not required.
  • Timeliness: Demonstrate an ability to work efficiently within project timelines.
  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with clients, coworkers, contractors, and agency staff.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in reading and interpreting plans and specifications, along with performing quantity and engineering computations.
  • Physical Requirements: Capable of outdoor work in varying weather conditions and terrains; ability to lift 50 lbs and engage in repetitive physical activities.
  • Driving Requirement: A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is essential for this position.
