Financial Analyst - Department of Medicine

Division: Medicine
Work Arrangement: Hybrid
Location: Houston, TX
Salary Range: $70,618 - $85,000
FLSA Status: Exempt
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Summary

The Margaret M. and Albert B. Alkek Department of Medicine is seeking an experienced financial analyst to join our departmental finance team. The Financial Analyst provides financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting support to one or more sections/divisions within the Department of Medicine, serving as the primary financial point of contact for section leadership while maintaining consistent financial practices across the department.

Performs financial analysis, budget preparation and forecasting for one or more assigned sections within the Department of Medicine. Monitors section-level revenue, expenses, and fund balances; prepares routine and specialized financial reports for section chiefs, section administrators, and central department finance leadership; and supports the department's centralized finance function by ensuring accurate, timely, and consistent financial information across assigned sections.

This position is eligible to work a hybrid work arrangement (50% onsite / 50% from home) within the Greater Houston, TX area. Current BCM employees who are eligible to transfer are encouraged to apply.

Job Duties
  • Serves as the primary financial analyst for multiple assigned sections within the Department of Medicine, acting as a liaison between section leadership and the department's central finance team.
  • Analyzes and monitors operating budgets for assigned sections to ensure compliance throughout the fiscal year; identifies variances and requests budget revisions as needed.
  • Monitors expenses, revenue, and financial accounts across assigned sections.
  • Reviews and approves financial transactions across assigned sections.
  • Performs account reconciliation, journal entries, and cost transfers; ensures accuracy and proper documentation in accordance with BCM policy and sponsor/institutional guidelines.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports and variance analyses for section chiefs, section administrators, and department leadership; prepares ad hoc and specialized financial analyses as requested.
  • Assists with annual budget development, salary planning, and multi-year financial forecasting for assigned sections, in coordination with the central finance team.
  • Partners with section administrators and central finance leadership to identify process improvements and standardize financial practices across sections.
  • Maintains supporting documentation and internal controls sufficient to support internal and external audits.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in an academic medical center, medical school, hospital, or other academic/healthcare environment.
  • Experience in financial analysis, budgeting, or long term planning.
  • Experience with faculty practice plan or clinical revenue cycle financials.
  • Experience with financial models.
  • Proficiency with financial/ERP systems and advanced Excel skills.
  • High degree of flexibility, the ability to work independently, and professional communication skills.
