Job description

title: ALARM PRECEPTOR

DEPARTMENT: ALARM

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

REPORTS TO: Alarm deputy chief

EFFECTIVE DATE: 08/11/2026

SUMMARY

The primary function of the ALARM Preceptor is to provide initial training for new Call Takers and Dispatchers. This position will work closely with ALARM Deputy Chief of Operations and Captains to ensure the successful training of new employees. This position will be a part of the dispatcher centers daily staffing and also performs the essential duties of both Call Takers and Dispatchers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following:

  • All ALARM Call taker and Dispatcher Essential Duties and Responsibilities listed in those respective job descriptions. Staff center on rotating shift and rotate positions as appropriate.
  • Oversees multiple different computer software systems such as base security cameras, fleet GPS, radio system, and CAD system.
  • Demonstrates extensive communications skills and exercises considerable judgment under pressure.
  • Serve as an example and maintain high standards for health, safety, welfare, and ethical behavior in ALARM.
  • Support, interpret, and comply with the core values, policies and SOPs of MCHD.
  • Work with the ALARM Deputy Chief of Operations and ALARM Captains to coordinate training and serve as a trainer for new employees.
  • Instructing, training and counseling MCHD ALARM trainees on job related skills and responsibilities.
  • Deal with sensitive information in a discreet and professional manner by maintaining confidentiality
  • Trains new employees and coordinates their training needs with the shift Captain; completes daily observation reports (DOR) to record training progress.
  • Reviews work performed by MCHD ALARM trainees to ensure accuracy, completeness and status of assignments.
  • Identify and reconcile trainee inaccuracies and document the identified training in the appropriate software.
  • Establish and model a service-oriented culture that supports the organizational values.
  • Maintains an attendance record in line with company policy and department guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position may be assigned a trainee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • AA/AS or equivalent industry experience preferred.
  • Minimum of one year experience as a MCHD dispatcher or 5 years of EMS/FIRE dispatch
  • Effective use of CAD systems.
  • Effective use of System Status Management practices.
  • Effective in the use of various telecommunications devices and practices.
  • Proficient typing skills that meet department standards.

SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE

  • Proficient word processing, database, and spreadsheet skills required.
  • Basic Email and Internet skills required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Current Texas Driver's License.
  • Texas Department of Health EMT-Basic. (obtain within a year)
  • Current International Academies of Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification.
  • Current International Academies of Emergency Fire Dispatch Certification.
  • Current CPR card.
  • APCO Communications Training Officer Certification (Within one year)
  • Required NIMS Training as referenced in the Safety & Emergency Management Policy SEM 27-201 for COM / Alarm (Communications).
  • Remain insurable by the current insurance vendor of MCHD.
