QA Tech
Allied Mineral Products is a leading manufacturer of monolithic refractories worldwide. We are seeking a QA Tech. in our Columbus, Ohio plant. The QA Tech, under the direction of the Quality Assurance Supervisor, confirm that the quality of incoming raw materials and finished products is maintained at acceptable levels. Also, it must ensure all Quality and Production related Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) are followed.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Complete all laboratory work requests assigned. Also participate in performing all pertinent tests for COA’s.
  • Maintain an orderly file on work performed. This file is to contain all pertinent information regarding all work undertaken.
  • Observe and conduct practical evaluation tests as required. These tests include density test, flow tests, exotherms, screen analyses, moisture contents, bond detection, casting set times, workability tests, magnetic testing, etc.
  • Complete work assigned in evaluating raw material samples received.
  • Assist in the evaluation of all technical problems as requested. This could involve helping the Quality Assurance Department examine suspect raw material or finished product. This work is to be done at the direction of the Quality Supervisor, or Manager of Quality.
  • When requested, write reports on work completed and observations made.
  • Assist in the calculating, recording, and maintaining of up-to-date files on all tests and screen analyses performed.
  • Under the supervision of the Quality Assurance Supervisor, predict formula changes necessary by computations of variations in raw materials, and prepare batch sheets reflecting such changes prior to issuing to batching crews.
  • Prior to issuing to batching crews, be sure that the use of available re-blend is included on all batch sheets. Also make certain re-blend is used and reported; to verify the accuracy of Re-blend Inventory.
  • Help check the batches by watching the Batch Crew for batching errors and by observing the batches while being placed into the mixer systems. Check all labeling and dating of raw materials to ensure they are correct.
  • Verify all finished products are labeled and packaged correctly. Complete all QA tests and place the data into the computer system. Collect storage samples and keep them in order. Make certain all finished products are approved with a sticker before being placed into inventory.
  • Assist in the training of any new QA Technician, Sales Trainee, or other employee, as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining an orderly plant layout, particularly in raw materials, and with emphasis on the use of partial pallets, shortest rows of materials, and test materials. Also maintain all QA offices and keep them neat, clean and orderly.
  • Attend meetings and serve on various committees when requested.
  • Assist in the development of new test methods and procedures and recommend revisions of existing test procedures and forms.
  • Be familiar with the job duties of the Quality Assurance Supervisor, assume necessary duties in their absence.

Qualifications
  • Must be physically and mentally fit for duty.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Dependable and able to maintain the attendance required to perform the job.
  • Must be able to compute basic math functions: Calculate % of additives needed, Calculate % moisture present in sample, etc.
  • Ability to read, write, comprehend and fully understand: SOPs, SDSs, labeling, safety and health regulations, and procedures within the job, this job group and the plant.
  • Ability to operate computerized equipment, read scales, recognize product problems, malfunctions and patterns out of specification.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential, particularly Excel graphing and charting.
  • Good human relation skills and a practical approach to problem solving are necessary.
  • Ability to maintain close attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Associate degree in Ceramic Engineering or another technical field. An alternative would be at least five years' experience in the ceramics industry.
Working Environment
  • The job is in a dusty environment.
  • Working in a hot and/or cold environment.
  • Required to wear respirator, safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety shoes.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to qualify for and wear a respirator.
  • Work requires sitting, standing, and/or walking for long periods of time.
