Position Information

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Houston District is seeking an experienced and motivated Traffic Maintenance Crew Chief to join our Traffic Systems Maintenance Office. This position serves as a lead worker responsible for coordinating and performing the maintenance and repair of traffic signals, roadway illumination, flashing beacons, and other traffic system assets across the Houston District. The Crew Chief provides day-to-day leadership for a field crew, helping plan work activities, coordinate personnel and resources, and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with TxDOT standards. Performs specialized and complex electrical/electronic technical work related to traffic management/control systems, communication, illumination or traffic data collection devices/systems. Serves as a lead worker for technical employees engaged in developing, installing, testing, programming and repairing of electrical/electronic devices/systems. Work may require working in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

• Organizes the workforce in response to emergency situations.

Coordinates and assists in overseeing the installation and repairs of infrastructure equipment.

May serve as a lead worker by serving as a resource for complex questions; presenting workflow and operational updates to the supervisor/manager; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage.

Installs, troubleshoots and maintained hardware and software related to traffic systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems, land mobile radio communication systems or the Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System.

Performs complex electronic repairs and rewires systems; adjusts and reprograms equipment/systems and replaces controllers and other electronic devices.

Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

• High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

5 years construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Extensive knowledge of:

Maintaining effective working relationships with others

Leading,assigning,reviewing,andmonitoringtheworkof others

Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems

Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
