What does a traffic engineering intern do?

A Traffic Engineering Intern assists professional engineers in designing, analyzing, and improving transportation systems to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow. Their tasks often include collecting traffic data, performing field observations, helping with traffic studies, and using software to model traffic patterns. Interns may also support the preparation of reports, presentations, and technical drawings. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and insight into the transportation engineering field.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on as a traffic engineering intern?

As a Traffic Engineering Intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of projects such as collecting and analyzing traffic data, preparing reports, and supporting the design of roadway and intersection improvements. You'll likely use industry-standard software to model traffic patterns, help with fieldwork like traffic counts, and collaborate with engineers and planners to develop solutions for safety and congestion issues. These experiences provide valuable exposure to real-world transportation challenges and allow you to work closely with experienced professionals in multidisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a traffic engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Traffic Engineering Intern, you should have a solid grasp of civil or transportation engineering principles, typically backed by progress toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with traffic analysis software (such as Synchro or VISSIM), Microsoft Office, and basic GIS tools is often required.
