Job Title:
Traffic Controller 1
Pay Details:
The starting hourly rate for this position is $25.00 per hour.
The Traffic Controller I is a uniformed, entry-level position typically assigned to a specific post (e.g., crosswalk or intersection) to support the safe and efficient movement of vehicle and pedestrian traffic on District private roadways. This role supports event operations, construction activity, and roadway maintenance by setting up and removing traffic control devices under the direction of a Traffic Controller 2, Traffic Controller 3, or Traffic Control Lead.
Responsibilities
  • Work under close supervision from a Traffic Controller II, Traffic Controller III, or Traffic Control Lead
  • Perform single-post assignments only
  • Set up and remove traffic control devices (cones, signs, barriers) in accordance with safety regulations and event/project requirements
  • Guide vehicle and pedestrian traffic using signs, flags, hand signals, whistles, and verbal instructions to promote safety and minimize congestion
  • Monitor pedestrian movement from an assigned post to prevent mid-block crossing of the roadway
  • Operate traffic control devices such as stop/slow paddles or automated flagging assistance devices (AFADs)
  • Store and perform basic routine maintenance on traffic control equipment as directed (e.g., battery charging, equipment cleaning)
  • Immediately report any damaged or faulty equipment to a supervisor
  • Coordinate with team members, leads, and the manager using a handheld UHF radio; communicate clearly and courteously with guests while ensuring safe traffic flow

Qualifications
  • Valid flagger certification through a Caltrans-certified training provider
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Previous experience in traffic control, construction, or public safety is an asset

  • Knowledge of traffic control procedures and safety standards
