What is a traffic control laborer?

Traffic Control Laborers are workers responsible for directing and managing the flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic around construction sites, road maintenance projects, or other temporary road disruptions. They set up signs, barricades, cones, and flagging equipment to ensure the safety of both workers and the public. Their duties may include communicating with drivers, monitoring traffic conditions, and helping maintain a safe work environment. This role requires strong attention to safety protocols and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a traffic control laborer?

To thrive as a Traffic Control Laborer, you need a solid understanding of safety regulations, physical stamina, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with traffic control devices, flagging procedures, and certifications such as a flagger card are typically required. Attention to detail, clear communication, and teamwork are valuable soft skills for ensuring safety on construction sites. These qualifications are essential for maintaining safe traffic flow and protecting both workers and the public in busy or hazardous environments.

What are some common challenges traffic control laborers face on the job, and how can they be addressed?
