What is a trading risk specialist?

Trading Risk Specialists are professionals who identify, assess, and manage risks associated with trading activities in financial markets. They monitor trades, analyze market data, and ensure compliance with risk management policies to prevent significant losses. Their role often involves working closely with traders, risk managers, and compliance teams to maintain the financial health and stability of a trading firm or financial institution.

How does a trading risk specialist typically interact with traders and other departments to manage risk effectively?

Trading Risk Specialists work closely with traders, portfolio managers, and compliance teams to monitor and mitigate trading risks. They often participate in daily risk meetings, provide real-time analysis of trading positions, and ensure adherence to risk limits. Collaboration is essential, as they communicate potential exposures and recommend actions to keep the firm's risk profile within acceptable boundaries. This cross-functional teamwork helps maintain a strong risk culture and supports sound decision-making across the trading floor.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trading risk specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trading Risk Specialist, you need strong quantitative analysis skills, a solid understanding of financial markets, and typically a degree in finance, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with risk management platforms, trading systems, and certifications like FRM (Financial Risk Manager) are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate complex risks clearly set top performers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial to accurately identify, assess, and mitigate trading risks, ensuring financial stability and compliance within the organization.

Job description

Description & Requirements

Bloomberg is a global leader in business and financial information, news, and insight. We use innovative technology to deliver trusted data and bring transparency to the financial markets. Our customers around the world rely on us for the tools and information they need to make critical investment decisions and stay connected across the financial community. To support our 26,000+ employees in over 150 locations, we provide the environments and systems that enable collaboration, productivity, and innovation.

Bloomberg’s Multi-Asset Risk System (MARS), together with our derivatives data and valuation services (BVAL OTC), delivers a comprehensive suite of risk management tools. These solutions provide consistent, consolidated views of risk across the enterprise. Powered by Bloomberg’s industry‑leading pricing library, market data, and mortgage cash flow engine, MARS enables front office, risk, middle office, and collateral teams to analyze portfolios, manage exposure, and respond confidently to changing market conditions.

As part of Bloomberg’s Enterprise Relationship Services (ERS) offering, we provide a premium, high‑touch service model designed to help clients maximize the value of our risk solutions through deep expertise, proactive engagement, and strategic partnership.

What’s the role?

We are hiring experienced risk professionals to join our Enterprise Risk Services (ERS) team as Risk Services Specialists. This group of domain experts delivers a differentiated, premium service to Bloomberg’s most strategic buy‑side clients.

This is a highly client‑facing role that blends risk expertise, product mastery, and commercial impact. You will act as a trusted advisor to risk managers, treasury teams, and senior stakeholders, helping them optimize workflows, deepen their use of MARS, and unlock additional value from Bloomberg’s risk ecosystem.

You will also play a key role in driving client adoption, supporting sales initiatives, and influencing product development, while delivering an exceptional client experience.

Core Responsibilities

Client Partnership and Service Excellence

Act as a primary point of contact for strategic ERS clients, delivering a high‑touch, consultative experience.

Build strong, trusted relationships across client organizations and provide tailored guidance on risk workflows and best practices.

Proactively identify client needs, anticipate challenges, and deliver solutions across multiple support channels including chat, tickets, calls, and on‑site engagements.

Product and Domain Expertise

Develop deep expertise in MARS, BVAL OTC, and related workflows across asset classes.

Stay current on market developments and regulatory changes, translating them into actionable client insights.

Serve as a subject‑matter expert, helping clients interpret complex risk analytics and implement best‑in‑class approaches.

Commercial Impact and Growth Enablement

Partner closely with Sales to support revenue generation, including identifying expansion opportunities and contributing to client engagements.

Drive adoption of ERS services and advanced platform capabilities.

Provide structured client feedback and market intelligence to Product and Engineering teams to inform roadmap prioritization.

Operational Excellence and Innovation

Lead onboarding of new workflows and use cases, ensuring seamless client integration.

Identify process gaps and introduce scalable solutions to improve efficiency and service quality.

Manage client communications during incidents or escalations with transparency and professionalism.

We’ll trust you to:

Own the end‑to‑end client experience for a portfolio of ERS clients on the MARS platform.

Act as a trusted advisor on risk analytics, derivatives valuation, and portfolio workflows.

Build and maintain senior stakeholder relationships across front office, risk, and operations teams.

Drive client adoption of advanced MARS capabilities and ERS services.

Partner with Sales, Product, and Engineering to enhance client outcomes and platform performance.

Translate client needs into actionable product feedback and commercial opportunities.

Lead client training sessions, workshops, and strategic reviews.

Manage escalations effectively, ensuring timely and high‑quality resolution.

You’ll need to have:

4+ years of experience in Financial Services or a Financial Technology company.

Experience with derivatives, either on the buy‑side, sell‑side, or within a vendor supporting derivatives market data or risk analytics tools.

Proven ability to build relationships across a range of stakeholders including technical users, traders, product managers, and senior leadership.

Strong product, technical, and market knowledge, with the ability to apply this in a client‑facing environment.

Excellent client service and communication skills.

Ability to contribute to product testing, implementation, and project‑based work.

Strong prioritization and multitasking skills, with a proactive and collaborative mindset.

High energy, adaptability, and a solutions‑oriented approach.

Demonstrated career progression and impact within previous roles.

Strong presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

We’d love to see:

Strong understanding of risk management practices and derivatives valuation.

CFA or FRM designation.

Experience with mortgages including MBS, CMBS, RMBS, TBAs, CLOs, and pools, along with pre‑payment modelling.

Familiarity with regulatory frameworks such as FRTB, SIMM, and SA‑CCR.

Interest in technology, with experience in Python or other programming languages.

Prior experience using Bloomberg products.

Spanish fluency.
