About this Role
Advanced Electric Systems is looking for motivated individuals to join our team as Apprentice Fiber Technicians. This is an opportunity to build a career in the fiber optic and electrical infrastructure industry while receiving hands-on training and working alongside experienced Fiber Technicians and Journeymen.
The majority of our fiber work involves OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) fiber splicing, installation, and testing on high-voltage transmission infrastructure. As an Apprentice Fiber Technician, you will learn the skills and procedures necessary to safely and properly perform OPGW fiber work while developing your technical abilities in the field.
You will receive on-the-job training in fiber splicing, testing, installation, troubleshooting, fiber documentation, and job-site safety. Apprentices will work under the direction of experienced technicians and progressively take on additional responsibilities as their skills and knowledge develop.
This is a traveling position, and regular travel is an essential requirement of the job. Apprentice Fiber Technicians must be willing and able to travel to various project locations, often outside of their home area, for extended periods of time. The position may require overnight stays, extended project assignments, and travel based on current project needs. Applicants must be willing to travel regularly as a condition of employment.

What You'll Do
As an Apprentice Fiber Technician, you will learn and assist with:
  • OPGW fiber optic installation, splicing, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Working primarily with OPGW fiber associated with high-voltage transmission lines
  • Fusion and mechanical splicing of fiber optic cables under the direction of experienced technicians
  • Operating OTDRs, power meters, VFLs, and other fiber testing equipment
  • Reading and understanding fiber schematics, OPGW splicing diagrams, network maps, and construction drawings
  • Installing and maintaining OPGW splice enclosures, hardware, patch panels, and other fiber components
  • Performing fiber testing and documenting test results
  • Assisting experienced technicians with troubleshooting and identifying fiber faults
  • Learning proper fiber preparation, splicing, testing, and documentation procedures
  • Maintaining accurate daily logs, splice records, test results, and other project documentation
  • Working closely with Journeyman Fiber Technicians, project managers, engineers, and field crews
  • Following all company safety practices and site-specific safety requirements
  • Learning and following proper procedures when working around high-voltage transmission infrastructure
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Traveling regularly to project locations throughout the region and/or across North America
  • Working extended and varying assignments based on project requirements
  • Staying overnight away from home as required by project location and schedule

Required Qualifications
  • Willingness to learn the fiber optic trade and develop into a skilled Fiber Technician
  • No previous fiber experience required; fiber optic or OPGW experience is a plus
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to work with tools and equipment
  • Ability to learn and follow technical instructions and procedures
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly for work, including overnight and extended project assignments
  • Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work at heights or in confined spaces
  • Ability to work safely around high-voltage transmission infrastructure
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous fiber optic, telecommunications, electrical, construction, or utility experience
  • Previous experience with OPGW fiber
  • Experience using hand tools and power tools
  • OSHA 10 certification
  • CPR/First Aid certification
  • CDL or willingness to obtain one
  • Experience working outdoors or on construction crews
  • Familiarity with iPads, tablets, GIS tools, or digital job tracking platforms
