Job description

Overview

Interstate Waste Services is the most progressive and innovative provider of solid waste and recycling services in the greater New York, New Jersey and Connecticut markets with a rail-served landfill in Ohio. IWS is committed to delivering high-quality waste, recycling and environmental services, while prioritizing the safety of our employees, customers and communities. We cater to a diverse range of industrial, medical and commercial/residential customers.

Founded in 1998, IWS has grown over the years through acquisitions, many of which were family-owned businesses that remain a part of our team today. We’re proud to combine the resources of a large company with the values and care of a family-run business

Essential Job Summary:

The Tractor/Trailer Mechanic performs preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on highway tractors, trailers, and related fleet equipment. This position is responsible for completing safe, quality repairs, reducing equipment downtime, and ensuring units are properly inspected, tested, documented, and ready for service.

The successful candidate is dependable, self-directed, and able to troubleshoot mechanical, air brake, suspension, electrical, and wheel-end systems in a fast-paced maintenance environment.

Essential Job Functions: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on tractors, trailers, and related equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair air brake, suspension, steering, axle, wheel-end, lighting, electrical, coupling, landing gear, door, and structural systems.
  • Inspect and service tires, hubs, bearings, brakes, hoses, wiring, lights, and other wear components.
  • Complete trailer body, floor, roof, door, crossmember, bracket, and minor welding or fabrication repairs when qualified.
  • Address driver-reported defects and inspection findings; verify repairs before returning equipment to service.
  • Use service information, wiring diagrams, diagnostic tools, and sound troubleshooting practices to identify repair causes rather than replacing parts by assumption.
  • Perform operational and quality-control checks after repair to confirm the unit is safe, road‑ready, and repaired correctly.
  • Accurately document complaints, findings, labor, parts used, repairs completed, verification results, and recommended follow‑up in the fleet maintenance system.
  • Communicate equipment status, parts needs, delays, and safety concerns promptly to maintenance leadership and operations.
  • Maintain tools, shop equipment, assigned work area, and parts in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Follow IWS Maintenance and Safety Programs, including proper PPE, lifting practices, lockout/tagout, blocking, and safe use of shop equipment.
  • Support road calls, overtime, weekend work, or emergency repairs when required by operational needs.
  • Perform other maintenance‑related duties consistent with the position.
Requirements and Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Hands‑on experience maintaining and repairing heavy‑duty tractors, trailers, or similar commercial fleet equipment.
  • Working knowledge of air brake, suspension, wheel‑end, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, pneumatic tools, power tools, jacks, lifts, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to read work orders, inspection forms, service manuals, wiring diagrams, and parts information.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to complete repair‑order documentation in a fleet maintenance system.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and communicate clearly with maintenance leadership, drivers, and operations personnel.
  • Ability to provide and maintain commonly required personal hand tools consistent with company policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a private fleet, refuse and recycling, transportation, LTL, or similar high‑utilization operation.
  • CDL Class A or B, or the ability to obtain one.
  • ASE, OEM, brake, welding, or trailer‑repair training.
Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed in a maintenance facility and outdoors, with exposure to noise, dirt, grease, odors, moving equipment, and seasonal weather conditions.
  • Requires standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and working around or beneath properly secured equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and move heavy parts and components using safe methods and available assistance or lifting devices.
  • Must be able to safely enter and exit tractors and trailers and work at varied heights or in confined areas when properly trained and protected.
