What is a toy store employee?

Toy Store Employees are retail workers who assist customers in toy stores by providing product information, helping them find items, managing inventory, restocking shelves, and operating cash registers. They ensure the store is organized and create a welcoming environment for shoppers, especially children and families. Additionally, they may handle returns, answer questions about toys, and suggest suitable products based on customer needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a toy store employee?

To thrive as a Toy Store Employee, you need strong customer service skills, basic math abilities for handling transactions, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and inventory management software is typically required. Excellent communication, patience, and enthusiasm help create a welcoming environment for both children and adults. These skills ensure positive customer experiences, efficient store operations, and contribute to the overall success of the retail business.

What are some common challenges faced by toy store employees during peak seasons, and how can they be managed?

During peak seasons like the holidays, toy store employees often encounter high customer volumes, frequent restocking needs, and increased inquiries about popular or out-of-stock items. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, the ability to stay calm under pressure, and effective teamwork to ensure shelves are stocked and customers receive prompt assistance. Proactive communication with supervisors and coworkers helps address issues quickly, while keeping a positive attitude ensures a welcoming environment for shoppers.

Job description

Legacy Toys is a utopia of toys, games, candy and more — a specialty toy store built to create unique, fun, repeatable experiences for families and kids of all ages. Founded in Minnesota in 2012, we believe a toy store should be somewhere you go to feel something, not just somewhere you buy something. Our team members are part of the experience: we greet warmly, demo and play, share what we love, and send every guest out the door smiling. If you love people, love play, and want to make someone's day — you'll fit right in.

About the role:

As a Retail Sales Associate, you're the face of the Legacy experience — welcoming guests of all ages and making every visit worth coming back for.

What you'll do:

  • Greet and welcome guests as they walk in
  • Help guests find products; answer questions on features, pricing, and special orders
  • Share product knowledge and enthusiasm — including hands-on demos
  • Tell guests about discounts, promotions, and the rewards program
  • Handle checkouts accurately
  • Keep shelves stocked and the store looking its best
  • Handle guest concerns positively; share feedback with your manager
  • Stay current on new products and trends; attend team meetings

What we're looking for:

  • Retail/customer-service experience a plus, but not required — we'll train the right person
  • Friendly, clear communicator who connects with kids and adults alike
  • Comfortable in a busy, fast-paced environment
  • Flexible availability, including weekends and holidays
  • Basic math for transactions, and a genuinely positive attitude

Physical requirements & work environment:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods during a shift
  • Frequently reach, bend, stoop, and use a step stool to stock and retrieve product
  • Occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds (e.g., boxes of stock)
  • Operate a point-of-sale system and handle products with manual dexterity
  • Work in a busy, high-energy retail environment, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Reasonable accommodations are available to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions

Benefits & perks:

Game On Us (a free game of your choice each quarter for eligible team members), a 30% employee discount (some brand exclusions), Earned Sick & Safe Time as required by law, flexible and predictable scheduling, in-store game lending, twice-yearly team swag and events, and a clear path to grow.

Legacy Toys is an equal opportunity employer.

We celebrate diversity and are committed to an inclusive, welcoming workplace for every team member. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law. We provide reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees with disabilities — if you need an accommodation during the application process, please let us know.
