Sub Car Driver

Isle of Wight County Schools is seeking a Sub Car Driver for the 2024-2025 school year. Candidates must hold a valid driver license. The minimum hourly rate of pay is $20.00 an hour. This is a 10-month position. Come join our team! An Equal Opportunity Employer Effective 02/23/2017

Position Specification

Title: Bus Driver

Division: Transportation FLSA: Non-Exempt General Statement of Job Performs intermediate semi-skilled work in the transportation of students to and from school and special events. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Essential Functions:

The following duties are representative for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Drives a school bus, picking up and delivering students to and from school;
  • Drives school bus on an assigned route to and from school and special events;
  • Conducts pre-trip inspections; maintains safety equipment; reports unsafe bus conditions and operating and equipment deficiencies; Adheres to preventive maintenance schedule; completes required forms and reports in an accurate and timely manner; adheres and complies with safety rules, motoring regulations and laws; Trains new divers; submits recommendations on new hires; Loads bus according to established procedures; Stops at authorized route schedule; stops at authorized stops only; Notifies proper authorities in case of bus breakdown or deviations in schedule; Ensures that all students are accounted for and all runs are covered; Washes bus; cleans bus inside and out; fuels bus as required; Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for school bus operations; Files written reports concerning bus condition and riders behavior;
  • Reports all accidents and completes required reports; Conducts periodic emergency bus evacuation drills; Transports students to special events and field trips; Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on bus; Makes bus available for periodic maintenance; and, Performs related work as required.

Education and/or Experience High school or GED. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Certificates, Licenses, Permits: CDL License Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of operating a school bus; geography of the county and the location of streets and roads.

Skill in the safe operation of a school bus.

Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; assist children by using patience and understanding; establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, associates and students.
