Job description

The Role
The Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC) is seeking a Part-Time Competitive Climbing Assistant Coach to join our Outdoor Sports team for the 2026-2027 season. This individual will support the development of MAC climbing athletes competing at the local, regional, divisional, and national levels.   Under the direction of the Head Coach, this role assists with athlete training, supervision, competition support, and route setting while fostering a safe, inclusive, and positive team environment. This position is ideal for someone looking to build a long-term career in climbing coaching and athlete development.
 
What You’ll Do
  • Assist the Head Coach in coaching and supervising competitive climbing athletes
  • Support and implement training plans, practice schedules, and athlete development programs
  • Coach, motivate, and inspire climbers to grow their skills and progress
  • Participate in weekly route setting across boulder, sport, and speed walls
  • Travel to local and regional competitions to support athletes during events
  • Communicate professionally with athletes, parents/guardians, and team members
  • Follow program policies, procedures, and direction from coaching leadership
  • Help identify opportunities to improve programming and athlete development
  • Provide written observations or reports as needed
  • Maintain a safe environment by recognizing and addressing potential hazards
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, and development opportunities
  • Represent and promote MAC’s mission, values, and code of conduct
  • Support additional recreational programs and community engagement efforts as needed
Note: This position is an on-site role that may require evenings, weekends, and other non-standard work hours based on training schedules, competitions, and program needs. 
 
What You’ll Bring
  • 2 years of competitive climbing coaching experience preferred
  • At least 4 years of personal climbing experience
  • Knowledge of climbing techniques, safety standards, and athlete development
  • USA Climbing Level 2 Coach certification
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification
  • SafeSport certification and ability to pass a background check
  • Proficiency in top-rope and lead belaying with an Assisted Braking Device (or willingness to learn)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask, stay organized, and manage time effectively
  • A collaborative mindset and commitment to team success
