Tooling Development Engineer information

What is a tooling development engineer?

A Tooling Development Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and implements tools, dies, molds, and fixtures used in manufacturing processes. They work closely with design, production, and quality teams to ensure that tools are efficient, cost-effective, and meet product specifications. Their responsibilities may include creating CAD models, overseeing tool fabrication, conducting tests, and troubleshooting tooling issues. Tooling Development Engineers help improve manufacturing productivity and product quality by optimizing tooling designs and processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tooling development engineer?

To thrive as a Tooling Development Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, manufacturing processes, and CAD design, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD, experience with CNC machinery, and knowledge of tooling standards are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and address production challenges. These skills are crucial for designing efficient, high-quality tools that support manufacturing productivity and product quality.

What are some common challenges faced by tooling development engineers when working on new product launches?

Tooling Development Engineers often encounter challenges such as tight project timelines, evolving product designs, and the need to balance cost-effectiveness with quality. Collaborating closely with design, manufacturing, and quality teams is crucial to address design-for-manufacturability issues early and minimize costly modifications. Additionally, sourcing materials and coordinating with external toolmakers can present logistical hurdles, especially when working with global supply chains.

Job description

AWS Security's Security Communications (SecComms) team builds and operates the platforms, tools, and systems that enable Amazon's security organization to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at scale. We support security events, ongoing security programs, vulnerability communications, and strategic initiatives that span multiple Amazon business units and AWS services. Our engineering products are the connective tissue between security findings, remediation owners, and the people responsible for keeping Amazon and its customers safe.
We are seeking an experienced Software Development Engineer to drive the design, development, and operation of software systems that power security communications workflows, automation, and integrations at scale

This role is for a builder who brings engineering rigor to ambiguous problems, cares deeply about customer outcomes, and thrives working across organizational boundaries with security engineers, program managers, and communications professionals.
Security Communications serves as the engineering and operations hub for AWS-related security messaging, stakeholder notification, and communications tooling across the organization. Our team is responsible for building scalable platforms that enable consistent, reliable, and timely communication during high-severity security events, coordinated vulnerability disclosure, and routine security program operations.

We are a cross-functional team - engineers work shoulder-to-shoulder with communications professionals, security operations personnel, AWS service owners, and executives. Candidates should be comfortable collaborating in this environment and contributing to discussions that span both technical and non-technical domains.
Key job responsibilities
Design & Delivery
* Design and deliver software features and improvements spanning the full lifecycle - including scoping, architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance - for major portions of the SecComms platform.
* Work backwards from customer and stakeholder needs to define requirements and translate them into well-designed, maintainable software solutions.
* Design cohesive software implementations for difficult problems with visible risks or roadblocks; bring clarity to ambiguous requirements and identify simple, extensible designs.
* Balance constraints across new feature development, technical debt, and operational reliability; limit short-term workarounds in favor of sustainable solutions.
* Produce high-quality, well-tested, documented code that adheres to the Amazon Code Bar and can be maintained and extended by teammates who did not author it.
Operational Excellence
* Demonstrate operational excellence in all work; own and operate production services with appropriate alarms, telemetry, runbooks, and on-call response.
* Actively participate in operational support; identify and resolve the root causes of operational issues rather than accepting the status quo.
* Routinely identify and execute on opportunities to improve team operational processes, automation, and tooling - do not settle for operational friction when it can be eliminated.
* Ensure that software failures are addressed with permanent fixes; avoid recurring incidents by addressing systemic causes.
Collaboration & Cross-Functional Partnership
* Work closely with security engineers, program managers, communications leads, and partner teams to understand the business and customer value of your software.
* Operate effectively across team and organizational boundaries; collaborate with adjacent teams in an inclusive and constructive manner when integrations, dependencies, or shared priorities arise.
* Balance customer requirements with team requirements; make effective priority tradeoffs between feature development and operational work.
* Communicate clearly and proactively about work in progress, technical decisions, blockers, and scope changes to all relevant stakeholders - both technical and non-technical.
Mentorship & Engineering Culture
* Actively mentor engineers on the team; provide substantive, constructive code review feedback to peers including more senior engineers.
* Train new team members on how the SecComms software is constructed, tested, operated, and secured - and how it fits into the broader Amazon Security architecture.
* Document what the team's software does, how it is constructed, and how it connects to the bigger picture; keep documentation current as systems evolve.
* Seek feedback actively and early; incorporate feedback into designs and implementations to continuously raise the engineering bar.
* Evaluate and apply industry innovations - new tools, design patterns, and AWS capabilities - where they improve team outcomes.
