Commissioning Electrician (Data Center/Mission Critical)

Location: Chicago, IL

Job Type: 12-Month W2 Contract (Potential Extension)

Schedule: Onsite | Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM–5:00 PM

Compensation: $50–$60/hour DOE

About the Opportunity

Russell Tobin is supporting a leading global technology and cloud infrastructure organization in the hiring of a Commissioning Electrician to support large-scale data center commissioning operations. This role is ideal for experienced electrical professionals with a strong background in mission-critical environments who are passionate about technical excellence, training, and operational reliability.

You’ll join a highly collaborative commissioning team responsible for accelerating vendor onboarding and ensuring the successful execution of electrical systems commissioning across expanding data center operations.

What You’ll Do

Primary Responsibilities

  • Instruct and certify commissioning vendors on the proper execution of functional testing scripts for electrical data center equipment
  • Support commissioning activities involving:
    • Medium and low voltage power systems
    • UPS systems
    • Generators
    • Switchgear
    • PDUs
    • Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS)
  • Conduct hands-on field training and competency evaluations for vendor technicians
  • Assess vendor performance against established standards and issue certifications upon successful completion
  • Identify technical skill gaps and implement corrective action plans
  • Maintain accurate records of certifications, training completions, and evaluation outcomes
  • Audit onsite commissioning activities to ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Assist with the growth and maintenance of an accelerated vendor training program
  • Support the development and delivery of training materials, assessments, and hands-on exercises
  • Provide subject matter expertise for curriculum updates and process improvements
  • Collaborate closely with internal commissioning and learning & development teams

Required Qualifications

  • Active Journeyman Electrician License
  • 5+ years of experience commissioning electrical systems in data centers or other mission-critical facilities
  • Strong knowledge of medium and low voltage power distribution systems
  • Experience executing functional testing scripts for electrical infrastructure equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret:
    • Electrical drawings
    • Single-line diagrams
    • Specifications
    • Sequences of operation
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
  • Experience working in critical operations or high-reliability environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in training, instruction, mentorship, or technical coaching
  • Familiarity with commissioning documentation such as test plans, scripts, and completion reports
  • OSHA 30 certification
  • Experience supporting large-scale commissioning programs with multiple vendors
  • Familiarity with BMS or EPMS platforms
