What is a TNA nursing assistant?

TNA Nursing Assistants, or Temporary Nurse Aides, are individuals who provide basic care to patients in healthcare settings under the supervision of licensed nurses. The TNA role was created during the COVID-19 pandemic to address staffing shortages in long-term care facilities. TNAs help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and monitoring patients. They typically undergo a brief training program and may later pursue certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) if they wish to continue in the field.

What are some typical challenges a TNA nursing assistant may face during a shift, and how can they be managed?

TNA Nursing Assistants often manage multiple patients with varying needs, which can make time management and prioritization challenging during busy shifts. They may encounter physically demanding tasks, exposure to emotional situations, and the need to communicate effectively with both patients and interdisciplinary teams. Building strong organizational skills, seeking guidance from experienced staff, and practicing self-care can help manage these challenges and ensure high-quality patient care.
