How much do tissue processing jobs pay per hour?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Tissue Processing position, and why are they important?
To thrive in Tissue Processing, you need knowledge of laboratory procedures, strong attention to detail, and, ideally, an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a science-related field. Competency in using laboratory instruments such as microtomes, embedding centers, staining machines, and familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) is often required, with some roles preferring ASCP certification. Excellent organizational skills, teamwork, and effective communication are valued to ensure workflow efficiency and accuracy. These skills are crucial for producing high-quality tissue samples that enable accurate diagnosis and support patient care in clinical and research settings.
What are the typical daily responsibilities for someone working in Tissue Processing?
Professionals in Tissue Processing are primarily responsible for preparing, embedding, sectioning, and staining tissue samples for microscopic analysis. Day-to-day tasks often include labeling specimens, operating laboratory equipment, maintaining detailed records, and ensuring quality control. You will frequently collaborate with pathologists, histotechnologists, and other lab team members to ensure timely and accurate specimen preparation. This role may also involve meeting tight deadlines and adhering to strict safety and regulatory standards. Attention to detail and the ability to follow established protocols are key to success in this environment.
What is a Tissue Processing job?
A Tissue Processing job involves the preparation, preservation, and handling of biological tissues for medical, research, or transplant purposes. Responsibilities may include tissue recovery, sterilization, labeling, storage, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Professionals in this field work in healthcare facilities, laboratories, or tissue banks to process human or animal tissues for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research applications. Attention to detail, adherence to protocols, and knowledge of aseptic techniques are essential skills for this role.

Job description
The Slamon Laboratory in the Division of Hematology-Oncology, Department of Medicine is recruiting for a Specialist to work at the Translational Oncology Research Laboratory site in Santa Monica and at the UCLA main campus.
The successful candidate will work closely with the UCLA faculty and research staff providing expert-level execution of immunohistochemistry (IHC) and tissue-based translational pathology workflows to support diagnostic antibody discovery, biomarker development, and IND-enabling studies. In addition, the candidate will independently perform state-of-the-art tissue processing and multiparametric assay development by optimizing, standardizing, and validating both manual and automated platforms to generate reproducible, publication- and regulatory-quality data.
Desirable laboratory bench skills include hands-on experience with design, optimization, and performing immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays across diverse tumor tissue types to evaluate diagnostic and translational antibody candidates in addition to independently performing TMA staining and analysis to assess target expression prevalence across patient cohorts within defined tumor indications.
The candidate will also serve as a technical consultant for interpretation of staining intensity, subcellular localization, and tissue heterogeneity to assess biological relevance and diagnostic utility in addition to training students and/or staff.
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities, and do not have formal teaching responsibilities. Appointees will also be expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period.
Candidates should possess a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience demonstrating expertise in tissue microarray preparation and interpretation, frozen tissue processing and molecular correlative studies, data analysis and scientific reporting in addition to scientific documentation and cross-functional collaboration to enable noble therapeutics to fight cancer.
Preferred skills for this position include excellent interpersonal skills, experience with database management, and being able to work remotely effectively.
The shared values of the DGSOM are expressed in the Cultural North Star, which was developed by members of our community and affirms our unswerving commitment to doing what's right, making things better, and being kind.
