What is tissue engineering?

Tissue engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines principles of biology, engineering, and materials science to develop artificial organs, tissues, or biological substitutes that can restore, maintain, or improve tissue function. The goal is to create functional tissues in the lab that can be used to repair or replace damaged or diseased tissues in the body. This often involves using a combination of cells, scaffolds, and biologically active molecules to construct living tissues. Tissue engineering has applications in regenerative medicine, transplantation, and drug testing. The field is rapidly evolving, with ongoing research aimed at creating more complex and functional tissues.

What are jobs in tissue engineering?

Tissue engineering is a scientific discipline of regenerative medicine in which experts combine structural frameworks known as scaffolds with cells and biological agents to create functional replacement tissues. Jobs in this field include lab technician, research technician, and research bioengineer. As a technician or assistant, your duties involve managing the lab inventory, assisting with quality control and regulatory compliance, maintaining lab equipment, and working hands-on with laboratory test animals like rodents and pigs. As a bioengineer, you develop, lead, and oversee biomedical procedures. Additionally, your responsibilities involve collaborating with peers and writing reports, publications, and patent applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tissue engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tissue Engineer, you need a solid background in biology, biomaterials, and biomedical engineering, typically supported by a relevant degree (such as biomedical engineering or a related field) and laboratory experience. Senior Manager, R&D Biomechanical Engineering — Shark Beauty & Personal Care

About Us

SharkNinja is a global product design and technology company, with a diversified portfolio of 5-star rated lifestyle solutions that positively impact people’s lives in homes around the world. Powered by two trusted, global brands, Shark and Ninja, the company has a proven track record of bringing disruptive innovation to market, and developing one consumer product after another has allowed SharkNinja to enter multiple product categories, driving significant growth and market share gains. Headquartered in Needham, Massachusetts with more than 4,100 associates, the company’s products are sold at key retailers, online and offline, and through distributors around the world.

AI at SharkNinja

At SharkNinja, we’re building an AI-native culture. We’re not waiting for the future; we’re creating it. Our people are expected to experiment boldly, adopt new tools, and continuously raise what’s possible to create meaningful impact for our consumers. If you believe the best way to do your job hasn’t been invented yet, you’ll fit right in.

Senior Manager, R&D Biomechanical Engineering

Needham, MA (On-Site)

The Opportunity

Shark's products, including the recent CryoGlow and FacialPro Glow skincare devices, are used by millions of people around the world — and the reason they work as well as they do comes down to the engineering. We're looking for a Senior Manager of R&D Biomechanical Engineering who wants to be at the center of that: leading the technical direction of breakthrough products, building a team of exceptional engineers, and shaping how Shark's next generation of skincare technology gets made.

This isn't a role for someone who wants to manage from a distance. You'll be in the lab with your team one day and in front of senior leadership the next. You'll own the technical standard, the team culture, and the roadmap — from early-stage concept through mass production.

What You'll Do

You'll lead a growing team of engineers focused on biomechanical research and product performance across Shark's skincare portfolio, building directly on the success of GyroGlow and FacialPro Glow to define what comes next. That means setting technical direction, personally driving solutions on high-stakes programs, and making sure your team has the clarity, tools, and development they need to do their best work.

Specifically, you'll:

  • Define and own the technical strategy for Shark's next-generation skincare programs, connecting first-principles engineering — especially biomechanics as applied to skin, tissue, and facial contact — to real consumer outcomes
  • Be a hands-on technical leader — equally comfortable prototyping in the lab, running a rigorous design review, or presenting R&D findings to senior leadership
  • Build and scale the team: recruiting top engineering talent, creating development paths, and cultivating a culture of intellectual honesty and continuous improvement
  • Partner closely with cross-functional leaders across product, design, and operations to align technology development with Shark's beauty and personal care business priorities
  • Champion a "fail fast, learn fast" approach — compressing problems to their core requirements and iterating with both speed and rigor
  • Identify and resolve technical risk early, before it becomes a business problem

What You Bring

You're a strong engineer first. You have deep fluency in mechanical engineering, biomechanics, and physics fundamentals — heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mechanical design — and the instincts to apply them in fast-moving, ambiguous environments. You've solved hard problems and can show your work.

You're also a leader people want to follow. You know how to set a high bar without burning your team out, how to give feedback that makes engineers better, and how to keep a team energized through the complexity of real product development.

Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline (advanced degree a plus)
  • 5–10+ years in product development with meaningful leadership responsibility in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment
  • Experience leading teams across multiple concurrent projects, from early exploration through mass production
  • Hands-on experience with biomechanical research applied to product design
  • Comfort with test equipment, data analysis, and CAD fundamentals
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Excel or equivalent tools
  • Exceptional communicator — able to translate complex technical work for non-technical stakeholders at the senior level

Why SharkNinja

We move fast, we build things that actually ship, and we obsess over consumer experience in a way that's rare at our scale. You'll have real ownership, genuine cross-functional influence, and a team that's hungry to build something great. If you want to spend your career making products that reach people's homes and genuinely improve their lives — and leading the engineering team that makes it possible — this is the role.
