Job description

The Café Team Member plays a key role in creating a positive and engaging café environment. This position is responsible for preparing and serving food and beverages, providing friendly and efficient service, and maintaining a clean and organized workspace. Team Members contribute to a warm, community-focused atmosphere while ensuring consistent quality and service standards. Team Members also participate in a tip-based compensation structure tied to service delivery and overall café performance.

Schedule & Hours

This position is designed to support expanded café operations and maintain service seven days per week. The typical schedule will average approximately 30-32 hours per week on a rotating basis:

  • Four days one week
  • Three days the following week
  • Early morning shifts, typically 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Hours include time before opening and after closing to complete food preparation, stocking, sanitation, and closing duties. The café is expanding its menu offerings, and team members will play an important role in daily setup, food preparation support, and end-of-day cleanup activities. 

Essential Job Functions

Customer Service
•    Greet and assist customers in a friendly, welcoming manner 
•    Take orders, answer questions, and provide menu recommendations 
•    Deliver accurate and timely service to ensure a positive customer experience 

Food and Beverage Preparation
•    Prepare and serve coffee, tea, and other beverages following established recipes 
•    Prepare and assemble food items such as sandwiches, pastries, and snacks 
•    Ensure all items meet quality, safety, and presentation standards 

Operations and Cash Handling
•    Process transactions accurately using the point-of-sale (POS) system 
•    Handle cash, credit, and other forms of payment responsibly 
•    Package food and beverages for dine-in or takeout 

Workspace and Inventory
•    Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area 
•    Clean and sanitize equipment, utensils, and surfaces regularly 
•    Restock supplies and communicate inventory needs to the Food and Beverage Coordinator 

Team Collaboration
•    Work cooperatively with café staff and other GVR team members 
•    Communicate effectively regarding customer needs and operational flow 

Policy and Safety Compliance
•    Follow food safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards 
•    Adhere to GVR policies related to attendance, appearance, and customer service

Required Qualifications - Required qualifications to effectively perform the job. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. (Additional requirements may be designated by position.)
Knowledge of food safety regulations and best practices.
High School Diploma or GED.
Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.
Must obtain and maintain current CPR AED certification within 30 days of employment.
ServSafe Certification required.

Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
Basic proficiency with POS systems and general computer use
Ability to communicate clearly in English
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and events
Knowledge of food safety practices and sanitation standards
Ability to remain composed and effective during busy periods
Knowledge of, and the ability to follow, OSHA regulations, SDS standards, and precautions regarding blood-borne pathogens.

Work Environment - Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

Indoor and occasional outdoor service areas
May be exposed to chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, and potentially hazardous bodily fluids.
Exposure to heat and noise. Contact with employees, and public. Outdoor service areas. Exposure to a large number of people.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with increased levels during events.
