What is a tinyml?

A TinyML job involves developing and deploying machine learning models on ultra-low-power devices like microcontrollers and edge sensors. Professionals in this field work on optimizing algorithms for efficiency, ensuring models run with minimal computational resources. Tasks typically include data preprocessing, model quantization, and performance optimization for embedded systems. TinyML engineers collaborate with hardware and software teams to create AI-driven solutions in IoT, healthcare, and industrial applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a tinyml position?

To excel in a TinyML role, you need expertise in embedded systems, machine learning, signal processing, and proficiency in programming languages like C/C++ and Python, often backed by a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or computer science. Familiarity with TensorFlow Lite, microcontrollers (such as ARM Cortex-M), and deployment tools is typically required, along with relevant industry certifications. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and strong communication skills are valuable for translating business needs into efficient, resource-constrained ML solutions. These capabilities are crucial for integrating intelligent models onto edge devices, where memory, power, and processing efficiency are paramount.

What are some common challenges faced in a tinyml position?

Professionals in TinyML often encounter challenges such as optimizing machine learning models to fit within the tight memory and processing constraints of microcontrollers and edge devices. Adapting algorithms for low power consumption without sacrificing performance requires creative problem-solving and a deep understanding of both hardware and software limitations. Additionally, collaboration with hardware engineers, data scientists, and product designers is frequent, making strong communication and cross-disciplinary teamwork essential. Overcoming these challenges is highly rewarding, as it leads to innovative solutions powering the next generation of smart, connected devices.

Job description

At Bose Corporation, we believe sound is the most powerful force on earth - and for over 60 years, we have been a company built on innovation, excellence, and independence. Privately owned, fiercely customer-focused, and driven by our values, we continue to lead industries and transform lives through sound.
Today, Bose Corporation is entering an exciting new era. Across multiple global Business Units and Global Functions, we are shaping the future of audio technology, automotive, luxury, and premium experiences. We invite you to join us in this transformation.
Job Description
Bose is building the technologies that will define the next generation of audio experiences. Within Bose Labs, SEA&P transforms emerging technology into reusable architectures, technology building blocks, platforms, and reference designs that can scale across products, businesses, and technology partners.
We are seeking a Principal Systems Engineer - Systems Architect, Edge AI to help architect that future.
This is a deeply technical and creative role at the intersection of embedded systems, audio, machine learning, and AI-enabled engineering. You will assess new ideas, explore system architectures, prove technical feasibility, and help turn promising technologies into scalable Bose platforms and reusable IP across environments ranging from low-power wearables to phones, PCs, Macs, and Linux-based embedded systems.
A defining part of the role is also changing how architecture itself is done. You will build AI agents, simulations, and automated engineering loops that accelerate architecture exploration and stress-test candidate solutions against system requirements and constraints.
What You'll Do
  • Architect complex embedded hardware/software solutions for future Bose technologies.
  • Evaluate new concepts for technical feasibility, architectural tradeoffs, risk, and scalability.
  • Translate audio, sensing, ML, and AI technologies into reusable system architectures.
  • Build simulations, prototypes, and experiments to evaluate candidate solutions.
  • Develop agentic AI workflows and reusable AI-enabled engineering infrastructure for architecture exploration and verification.
  • Stress-test architectures across power, compute, memory, latency, performance, and security.
  • Architect Bose algorithms, models, frameworks, and IP for secure integration into third-party systems.
  • Influence the future Bose technology roadmap through deep understanding of embedded AI, silicon, audio, and edge computing.
  • Provide Principal-level technical leadership across Bose Labs, engineering teams, suppliers, and external partners.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Significant experience developing or architecting complex embedded hardware and software systems.
  • Strong systems architecture experience across hardware and software.
  • Experience with embedded processors, SoCs, DSPs, real-time systems, and Linux-based platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of digital audio signal processing and audio system architectures.
  • Experience implementing or deploying machine learning models on embedded or edge devices.
  • Understanding of edge-ML constraints including compute, memory, power, latency, and hardware acceleration.
  • Demonstrated experience using AI to solve meaningful technical problems with measurable engineering or business impact.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing AI agents, agentic workflows, or AI-enabled engineering systems.
  • Background in AI/ML model development, training, evaluation, or optimization.
  • Experience with AI-enabled simulation, design-space exploration, or technical verification.
  • Experience with TinyML, NPUs, DSP-based ML acceleration, or heterogeneous compute.
  • Experience with audio ML, speech processing, spatial audio, or intelligent noise management.
  • Demonstrated experience architecting advanced audio products or embedded audio systems.
  • Experience with hardware/software co-design, secure embedded architectures, SDKs, frameworks, or reference designs.
  • Experience working with semiconductor vendors, technology partners, third-party integrators, or licensing models.

Who You Are
You are a systems thinker, builder, and technical innovator who can move between silicon, embedded software, DSP, machine learning, and system architecture.
You enjoy ambiguous problems, explore multiple solutions before converging, and use experimentation and evidence to guide decisions.
Most importantly, you want to help shape the future of embedded AI and intelligent audio-and turn those possibilities into secure, scalable, reusable technologies that power the future of Bose.
