Job description

Family Legacy Missions International is seeking a Controller (CPA) to join our Dallas-based team. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely financial reporting, strengthening accounting systems and controls, and supporting effective financial planning and analysis. The Controller will play a key role in advancing financial operations and supporting the organization’s continued growth and global impact. This role will serve as the planned successor to our CFO.

Salary: $90,000–$120,000, commensurate with experience.

We are seeking a detail-oriented, relational leader with strong analytical skills, an agile and innovative mindset, and a passion for advancing Family Legacy’s mission to serve vulnerable children in Zambia.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Guided by the Chief Financial Officer, you will lead the accounting operations of Family Legacy Missions International with excellence, integrity, and purpose. This role is central to advancing our mission through faithful stewardship—ensuring accuracy, transparency, and strong financial discipline across the organization.

· Live and lead from your faith—cultivating a personal relationship with Christ and modeling servant leadership in every interaction.

· Champion stewardship and integrity—ensuring all financial activity is recorded in accordance with GAAP and reflects the highest standards of accountability.

· Deliver trusted financial insights—producing timely, accurate financial statements and providing analysis that equips senior leadership to make mission-aligned decisions.

· Own the close and reporting cycle—leading consistent, reliable month-end and year-end close processes that result in clear, decision-ready reporting.

· Safeguard the integrity of our financials—overseeing the general ledger, including journal entries, reconciliations, and internal controls.

· Navigate complexity with confidence—researching and resolving technical accounting issues and applying new guidance as needed.

· Lead audit and compliance efforts—partnering in the annual audit process and overseeing preparation for Form 990 and other key filings.

· Oversee giving and donor compliance—ensuring gifts are processed accurately and in alignment with donor intent and grant requirements.

· Direct core accounting operations—including accounts payable and payroll, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant processing.

· Step into what’s needed—taking on special projects and initiatives that help the ministry grow and expand its impact.

· Willingness and opportunity to travel to Zambia as needed for business no more than 2 trips per year for 7-14 days

What You Bring:

You are a detail-oriented, mission-driven accounting professional who combines technical excellence with strong judgment, humility, and a heart for stewardship.

Education & Credentials:

· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field required

· CPA designation strongly preferred, or actively pursuing certification

Experience & Expertise:

· 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting or financial reporting

· Strong knowledge of GAAP, with experience in nonprofit accounting environments preferred

· Familiarity with nonprofit tax compliance and reporting, including Form 990

· Demonstrated ability to research and apply technical accounting guidance

Skills & Capabilities:

· High level of integrity and commitment to financial stewardship and accountability

· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail

· Proven ability to improve processes and adapt to evolving systems and technologies

· Effective communicator—able to translate financial information clearly for non-financial leaders

· Experience leading, developing, and mentoring team members

Tools & Working Style:

· Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems (experience with ERP systems such as Sage Intacct a plus)

· Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

The Excel Beyond program was created to give students an opportunity to achieve their wildest dreams of becoming a professional in their preferred field or learn a trade to become employed.
