The Opportunity

Are you looking to make a difference in a fast growing Michigan based family business? Do you take pride in your work and enjoy building long term relationships with a wide range of timber producers?

Manthei Wood Products is a well established, year-round consumer of premium hardwood veneer logs. We have been responsibly and sustainably manufacturing hardwood face veneers for over 80 years, and we are aggressively growing and expanding our markets and are looking to add to our procurement team in Alabama.

We are currently searching for a Log Buyer that can fulfill the duties listed below. While we will review all applications that come in, this position requires an extensive knowledge of the forestry industry, including a detailed understanding of the characteristics of multiple log species, markets for different grades and types of logs, and a strong ability to communicate and negotiate. A well-established network within the industry is also preferred.

Please note that this position will ideally be located in Central Alabama and does require daily travel.

Duties

  • Traverse wooded areas or log yards on foot to inspect standing timber and/or cut logs
  • Measure, scale, and price veneer logs based upon company's needs and ability to profitably utilize what is being purchased
  • Hold log sales for any logs that company cannot use internally
  • Negotiate pricing and terms on all purchased material and sales to other vendors/customers
  • Verify log quality and value is in-line with company objectives
  • Work with Lead Log Buyer to manage objectives and day to day activities

Qualifications

  • 3-5+ years experience within the logging industry purchasing veneer logs
  • A basic understanding of computer skills
  • Exceptional negotiation skills
  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills
  • Basic understanding of logging logistics
  • Strong attention to detail
