What is a timber consultant?

Timber Consultants are professionals who provide expert advice and services related to the sourcing, management, use, and sustainability of timber and wood products. They often assist clients such as landowners, forestry companies, and construction firms in managing timber resources efficiently and in compliance with environmental regulations. Their role may include timber valuation, forest management planning, timber sales, and ensuring sustainable forestry practices. Timber Consultants help maximize the value of timber while promoting responsible forest stewardship. Their expertise is essential for balancing economic interests with environmental conservation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a timber consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Timber Consultant, you need a solid background in forestry, timber valuation, and land management, often supported by a degree in forestry or environmental science. Familiarity with GIS mapping tools, timber inventory software, and relevant certifications such as Registered Professional Forester (RPF) are commonly required. Strong negotiation, analytical, and communication skills help build trusted relationships with clients and stakeholders. These abilities ensure accurate assessments, sustainable resource management, and successful client outcomes in the forestry sector.

What are some common challenges timber consultants face when working with clients and suppliers?

Timber Consultants often navigate challenges such as ensuring sustainable sourcing, verifying the legality of timber products, and aligning client expectations with environmental regulations. They must stay updated on industry standards and certification requirements, which can vary by region and project. Building strong relationships with both clients and suppliers is essential, as consultants frequently coordinate negotiations, resolve disputes, and provide expert guidance on timber quality, pricing, and supply chain logistics.

Job description

Location: Atlanta, GA

Position Type: Full-time, permanent

EQUILIBRIUM is looking for an Intermediate/Senior Engineer to join our team in Atlanta. This role is a critical hire for a company that is growing quickly and has a very bright future.

EQUILIBRIUM is an award-winning mid-sized consulting Structural Engineering firm working on a diverse range of ambitious projects both locally and internationally. EQUILIBRIUM was founded in Vancouver in 1998 with a focus on progressive and innovative building projects, sustainability-oriented construction, and particularly projects utilizing timber construction.

While still based in Vancouver, BC, we are growing our presence in the US and France with our offices in Atlanta, GA and Paris respectively.

We have many exciting projects on the go in the US including multiple early-stage designs for mass timber residential towers, two residence hall projects at Georgia Tech, a large mass timber office building in Texas, a large corporate headquarters in California, and more.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a talented and ambitious structural engineer with 4 to 8+ years of experience to join our growing team. The role provides the opportunity to work on our most high-profile project, while also working directly alongside the leadership team, providing an opportunity for long-term career development within our growing company.

WHAT YOU'LL GET UP TO

•    Manage the structural design and construction administration for projects that raise the bar for sustainability and the integration of structure and architecture.

•    Develop structural solutions that do more than just meet code… you will design structures that are strong, resilient, sustainable, and directly contribute to the architecture of the building.

•    Perform structural analysis and develop designs from concept through construction with the support of the Equilibrium team.

•    Communicate your designs to our drafting team and coordinate the development of structural BIM models and drawings.

•    Have active involvement in design coordination with other consultants, contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders for your projects.

•    Have the opportunity to participate in internal committees (sustainability, technical standards, social, etc.) that help to foster your growth and keep Equilibrium on the leading edge.

•    An opportunity to be involved with business development.

•    Exact responsibilities will be dependent on experience level.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

•    Bachelor’s Degree from a Civil/Structural Engineering program required. Master’s degree preferred.

Requirements:

•    Located in Atlanta or willing to relocate.

•    Valid work status in the US.

•    Licensed Engineer in the US (PE/SE) preferred.

•    Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in a similar role.

•    Interest in mass timber. Mass timber experience a bonus.

•    Interest in embodied carbon and minimizing the climate impact of structural design.

•    Seismic analysis and design experience an asset.

•    Experience with structural analysis software such as RFEM, RSTAB, ETABS, SAFE, GSA, etc.

Skills:

•    Strong communication skills a must. Must thrive while working in a collaborative environment.

•    Enthusiasm and love for learning.

•    Disciplined work ethic with great attitude and energy.

•    Ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects and teams concurrently.

•    Organized, self-motivated, pro-active, detail-oriented, and willing to take on new challenges.

•    Problem-solver and critical thinker.

BENEFITS OF WORKING AT EQUILIBRIUM
